Freemasonry is a global fraternal organization with a long and storied history. Many famous people have been Freemasons over the years, including politicians, artists, and business leaders. The group’s influence and membership have changed over time, but it remains active today.

While many well-known Freemasons lived in the past, there are still notable members alive in the present day. Some current Freemasons continue to make their mark in various fields, from entertainment to politics, carrying on the organization’s traditions in the modern world. I’ll explore a few of these living Freemasons and their contributions to society.

1) Jesse Jackson

Jesse Jackson is a well-known civil rights activist, Baptist minister, and politician. He was born in 1941 in South Carolina. I’ve learned that Jackson is also a Freemason.

Jackson became a Master Mason in 1987. He’s part of the Harmony Lodge No. 88 in Chicago. He’s believed to be a 33rd Degree Prince Hall Freemason.

Prince Hall Freemasonry is a branch that split from mainstream lodges due to racial issues. It’s named after Prince Hall, a prominent Black Freemason from the 18th century.

Jackson’s involvement in Freemasonry adds another layer to his already impressive list of achievements. He’s known for his work in the civil rights movement and his presidential campaigns in the 1980s.

As a Freemason, Jackson likely values the organization’s principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. These align well with his public persona and activism.

2) Steve Wozniak

Steve Wozniak, known as “Woz,” is a famous Freemason who’s still alive today. He is known as the co-founder of Apple, the tech giant that changed personal computing forever.

Woz joined the Freemasons in 1980 at Charity Lodge No. 362 in California. He’s one of the most well-known current members of the fraternity.

Wozniak is more than just a tech genius. He’s also an electronics engineer, programmer, and philanthropist. His nickname “Woz” is widely recognized in tech circles.

Beyond Apple, Wozniak has kept innovating. He founded Efforce, a green tech and blockchain company. This shows his ongoing commitment to technology and sustainability.

Wozniak’s Masonic ties and tech achievements make him a standout figure. He bridges the gap between traditional fraternal organizations and modern innovation.

3) Buzz Aldrin

Buzz Aldrin is one of the most famous Freemasons alive today. Born in 1930, he’s best known as the second person to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

Aldrin became a Mason in 1963 at Oak Park Lodge No. 864 in Texas. He’s now a 33rd Degree Mason, which is the highest honor in Freemasonry.

I find it fascinating that Aldrin took a Masonic flag to the Moon. This symbolic act linked Freemasonry to one of humanity’s greatest achievements.

At 92 years old, Aldrin remains an active and proud Mason. He often speaks about how Masonic values like hard work and integrity have shaped his life and career.

Aldrin’s contributions go beyond space exploration. He’s an author, advocate for space travel, and public speaker. His life shows how Masonic principles can inspire great achievements.

4) John Elway

John Elway is a famous American football player and executive who is also a Freemason. I know he’s best known for his amazing career as quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

Elway joined Freemasonry later in life. He became a Freemason in 2002, after his playing days were over. He took part in a two-day class held by the Grand Lodge of Colorado.

I find it interesting that Elway has risen through the Masonic ranks quickly. He’s now a 33rd degree Mason, which is a high honor in Freemasonry.

Beyond Masonry, Elway stays busy with football. He works as an executive for the Broncos. He also runs the Elway Foundation, which helps kids who have been abused.

I think it’s cool that such a big sports star is part of Freemasonry. It shows that the group still attracts famous people from all walks of life.

5) Shaquille O’Neal

I’m excited to talk about Shaquille O’Neal, one of the most famous Freemasons. Shaq is a basketball legend known for his incredible skills on the court and his larger-than-life personality off it.

O’Neal became a Freemason in 2011. He joined Widow’s Son Lodge No. 28 in Boston, Massachusetts. This lodge is part of the Prince Hall Affiliated branch of Freemasonry.

Shaq has been open about his membership in the fraternity. He’s proud to be part of this group that values brotherhood and personal growth.

It’s cool how Shaq balances his public life with his Masonic duties. He’s a sports commentator and businessman, but still makes time for Freemasonry.

O’Neal’s involvement shows that Freemasonry is still relevant today. It attracts people from all walks of life, even big sports stars like Shaq.

6) Scottie Pippen

Scottie Pippen is a well-known name in basketball. He is a former NBA player who was a key part of the Chicago Bulls dynasty in the 1990s.

Pippen is also a member of the Freemasons. He belongs to a group called Prince Hall Freemasonry, which has a rich history in the African American community.

Some people have made a big deal about Pippen’s jersey number being 33. This number has special meaning in Freemasonry. But it’s important to note that there’s no proof Pippen chose this number because of his Masonic ties.

Pippen’s Masonic membership adds an interesting layer to his public image. It shows that even famous athletes can be part of this old and respected organization.

Pippen is one of the more high-profile Freemasons in sports. His involvement helps keep Freemasonry in the public eye and might inspire others to learn more about it.

7) Rick Wakeman

Rick Wakeman is a famous musician and Freemason. He was born in 1949 and is best known as the keyboardist for the progressive rock band Yes.

Wakeman joined the Chelsea Lodge 3098 of Freemasons in London. This lodge is known for its members from the entertainment industry.

I find it interesting that Wakeman combines his musical career with Freemasonry. He has spoken about how the values of the fraternity appeal to him.

One aspect of Freemasonry that Wakeman appreciates is its focus on charity. His lodge has raised over £100,000 for various causes in recent years.

Wakeman’s musical style blends classical themes with rock energy. This unique approach has made him a respected figure in progressive rock.

As both a successful musician and active Freemason, Wakeman represents an interesting intersection of art and fraternity. His ongoing involvement shows that Freemasonry remains relevant to public figures today.

8) Michael Richards

Michael Richards is a well-known American actor and comedian. He was born on July 24, 1949, in Culver City, California.

Richards is best for his role as Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show “Seinfeld.” He played this character from 1989 to 1998, winning three Emmy Awards for his performance.

Richards is also a member of the Freemasons. He joined the organization at some point during his career, though the exact date is not widely known.

Besides “Seinfeld,” I’ve seen Richards in other TV shows and movies. He appeared in “UHF” (1989) and had his own sitcom called “The Michael Richards Show” in 2000.

In recent years, Richards has kept a lower profile in the entertainment industry. He made a guest appearance on Jerry Seinfeld’s web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” in 2012.

As a Freemason, Richards likely participates in the organization’s activities and charitable efforts. However, like many members, he keeps the details of his involvement private.

9) Prince Edward, Duke of Kent

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, is a prominent figure in Freemasonry. He’s the current Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), a position he’s held for many years.

Born in 1935, Prince Edward is a member of the British royal family. He’s a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and has been involved in Freemasonry for decades.

Prince Edward has been the longest-serving Grand Master of UGLE. This shows his deep commitment to the organization.

The Duke of Kent’s role in Freemasonry continues a long tradition of royal involvement in the fraternity. Many British monarchs and royals have been Freemasons over the years.

Prince Edward’s dedication to Freemasonry is evident in his long tenure as Grand Master. He’s played a key role in guiding the organization in modern times.

10) Silvio Berlusconi

Silvio Berlusconi is a well-known Italian businessman and politician who is also a Freemason nowaday.

Born in September 1936, Berlusconi has had a long and eventful career. He served as the Prime Minister of Italy four times between 1994 and 2011.

Berlusconi’s involvement in Freemasonry is not widely publicized, but it is acknowledged in some circles. I believe his membership reflects the organization’s appeal to influential figures in business and politics.

While specific details about Berlusconi’s Masonic activities are limited, his association with the fraternity adds an interesting dimension to his public persona. It’s worth noting that many Freemasons, even famous ones, often keep their membership private.

In Berlusconi’s case, his connection to Freemasonry is just one aspect of his complex and sometimes controversial public life. I think it’s important to consider this alongside his other roles and accomplishments when examining his overall impact and legacy.

As a seasoned researcher and copywriter, I’ve dug deep into this intriguing connection to bring compelling insights.

This blog post unveils an unusual blend of melody and masonry, exploring notable Freemason musicians from varied genres and across eras. Ready for the grand tour? Read on!

The History of Musicians Who Were Freemasons

Musicians who were Freemasons have a rich history that spans different genres and time periods.

The Jazz Greats

As music enthusiasts, we can’t help but marvel at the profound influence that Freemasonry had on an array of jazz legends.

Notably, Duke Ellington, a defiant figure who pushed against societal norms and challenged traditional expectations of black musicians during his era was also a respected member of a Masonic lodge.

This intertwining of freemasonry and jazz wasn’t restricted to African-American artists alone; many white artists such as Glenn Miller and Irving Berlin also took up the badge of freemasonry.

Their contribution to jazz music is immeasurable; their boundary-breaking affinities mirrored in both their careers and masonic tenets helped shape the genre that we continue to cherish today.

The Sons of Prince Hall

In the realm of Freemasonry, few names resonate as well as Prince Hall. Together with 14 other free black men, he charted a remarkable course in history by entering into freemasonry back in 1775, giving birth to what we know today as Black or Prince Hall Freemasonry.

They built the world’s largest fraternity for black men, attracting luminaries such as Booker T Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.

The Sons of Prince Hall became significant figures within their communities and beyond. Masonic lodges became support networks that provided opportunities for networking, camaraderie, and social interaction among African-American musicians like Duke Ellington and Paul Robeson – both proud members of this association.

As we delve deeper into understanding these extraordinary individuals who combined their musical talents with Masonic traditions to create an enduring legacy, we remain captivated by the rich tapestry of music influenced by Freemasonry throughout history.

Freemasonry and Egyptology: The Sun Ra Connection

Sun Ra, a jazz musician and Egyptology enthusiast, forms an interesting narrative in the annals of Freemasons who are musicians. Born as Herman Poole Blount, he was always a mysterious figure creating avant-garde music with his Arkestra.

His work heavily drew from Masonic philosophy and ancient Egyptian symbolism. Sun Ra’s fascination with Egyptology could be traced back to George GM James’ influential book ‘Stolen Legacy: Greek Philosophy Is Stolen Egyptian Philosophy’.

He believed that wisdom has its roots deeply anchored in Ancient African cultures, similar to the ethos found within Freemasonry.

Embedding these ideas into his performances showcased more than just an artistic flourish; it turned them into deep explorations of Afrocentrism, spirituality and cosmic mysticism. This wasn’t only about musical experimentation but also reflected his personal quest for identity against marginalization—an embodiment of strength and resilience.

This connection between Freemasonry and Egyptology via Sun Ra presents an intricate tapestry interweaving history, music and esoteric knowledge—a testament not only to spiritual awakening but also to social empowerment through shared experiences.

Notable Freemason Musicians

Notable Freemason musicians include prog artists like Rick Wakeman and Pete Townshend, as well as musicians from other genres such as Louis Armstrong and Lil’ Kim.

Prog Artists

Prog musicians have been attracted to the world of Freemasonry throughout history. One notable example is Rick Wakeman, keyboardist for the progressive rock band Yes. It is believed that he draws inspiration from Masonic philosophy and spirituality in his music.

Mozart, a renowned composer from the 18th century, was also known to be associated with Freemasonry. Additionally, Pete Townshend and John Entwistle of The Who were reportedly members of Chelsea Lodge in London.

These artists exemplify how Freemasonry has influenced the world of progressive rock music through its concepts and ideologies.

Other Genres

In addition to the prominent presence of Freemason musicians in jazz and blues, there are also notable figures from other genres who have been associated with Freemasonry. One such genre is progressive rock music, which saw a surge in popularity during the 70s.

Artists like Rick Wakeman, keyboardist for the legendary band Yes, has been rumored to be a Freemason due to his involvement with the Chelsea Lodge in London. Another prog musician often linked to Freemasonry is Pete Townshend of The Who.

It’s important to note that while these rumors exist, concrete evidence of their Freemasonic affiliations may not be readily available. Nonetheless, it is fascinating how Freemasonry’s influence extends beyond jazz and into other genres, showcasing its impact on diverse musical communities throughout history.

The Influence of Freemasonry on Their Music

Freemasonry has had a profound influence on the music of many musicians throughout history. One key aspect of Freemasonry is its incorporation of ancient Egyptology and alternative interpretations of religious texts, which have deeply influenced both the lyrics and compositions of these musicians.

For example, Sun Ra drew inspiration from Freemasonry in his performances. The gnostic texts and references to ancient Egypt within Freemasonry attracted politicized African-Americans who sought alternative narratives outside traditional mainstream religions.

Their music often reflects these influences, creating a unique blend of spirituality and artistic expression.

Additionally, belonging to a Masonic lodge provided networking opportunities and support for musicians who often led an itinerant lifestyle. This support network allowed them to connect with others in the industry, collaborate on projects, and gain exposure to new ideas and techniques.

Many white jazz musicians such as Glenn Miller and Irving Berlin were also Freemasons, further highlighting the widespread influence this secret society had on the music industry.

Moreover, Prince Hall Freemasonry played a significant role in attracting key figures in the civil rights movement including Martin Luther King Jr’s father and Medgar Evers. The principles espoused by Prince Hall Freemasonry aligned with their belief in equality and justice for all individuals.

However, it is important to note that there are rumors about hip-hop artists being Freemasons; however, caution should be exercised when considering these claims as they often come from unreliable sources or websites with anti-masonic or anti-rap music biases.

In short, Freemasonry has left an indelible mark on the world of music by providing not only networking opportunities but also influencing artistic expressions through its incorporation of ancient Egyptology and gnostic texts.

Exploring this connection between Freemason musicians’ beliefs within their craft gives us valuable insights into how this secret society impacted their lives creatively.

The Impact on Their Personal Lives

Being a Freemason had a significant impact on the personal lives of musicians throughout history. For one, belonging to a masonic lodge provided them with a support network and comradeship that was particularly valuable for those leading an itinerant lifestyle.

Musicians often faced financial difficulties, especially during difficult times like the Great Depression, and being part of the fraternity could offer some stability and assistance.

Moreover, Freemasonry offered musicians networking opportunities that were crucial for advancing their careers. By connecting with other members in their lodges, they could gain access to gigs, collaborate with fellow artists, and receive mentorship from more established figures in the industry.

This support system within Freemasonry helped pave the way for many musicians’ success.

Additionally, freemasonry acted as a social platform where artists could exchange ideas and experiences with like-minded individuals who shared their passion for music and performance. It fostered an environment of camaraderie and friendship which enhanced their personal satisfaction.

Furthermore, membership in Prince Hall freemasonry held particular significance for African-American musicians during times of racial segregation. The fraternity offered black artists not only networking opportunities but also a sense of empowerment and pride within their community amidst ongoing struggles against discrimination.

This aspect is reflected by prominent figures such as Booker T Washington or W.E.B Du Bois who sought refuge in Prince Hall Masonry.

Overall, being involved in freemasonry had far-reaching effects on musicians’ personal lives – providing them with vital support networks, and career advancement opportunities through networking connections while also boosting self-confidence.

Conclusion

The connection between musicians and Freemasonry is a fascinating aspect of history. From jazz greats like Duke Ellington to iconic figures in the civil rights movement, freemasonry provided a support network and a sense of belonging for many musicians.

Whether through networking opportunities or drawing inspiration from Masonic symbolism, it’s clear that Freemasonry has had a significant impact on their music and personal lives.

Despite conspiracy theories surrounding society, Freemasonry remains an important part of musical history that continues to intrigue researchers and history enthusiasts alike.

Dive into the intriguing and mysterious world of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a prodigy whose life was as dramatic as his symphonies. Let’s unravel the enigmatic connection between Mozart and Freemasonry. Was this iconic composer a member of the secretive society?

Let’s explore!

Was Mozart a Freemason?

We can confidently say that Mozart was a member of the Freemasons. He joined the Freemasons in 1784 and remained an active member until his death. Moreover, many of Mozart’s friends were also Masons, and his father, Leopold, became a Mason during his visit to Vienna in 1785.

Plus, Mozart’s association with Freemasonry is evident in some of his works, such as the opera The Magic Flute, whose stage design contains Masonic symbols.

Mozart’s Entry into Freemasonry

As we delve into Mozart’s connection to Freemasonry, it is important to understand the context in which he joined the organization and his level of involvement. In this section, we will explore Mozart’s initiation ceremony and his relationship with various Masonic lodges.

Initiation Ceremony

Mozart was initiated into Austrian Freemasonry on December 14th, 1784 at the age of 281. He joined the Lodge “Zu Wohltatigkeit” (meaning “Charity”) in Vienna.

The initiation ceremony, as with most Masonic rituals, was a symbolic event designed to instill a sense of brotherhood and moral values in the initiate.

During this ceremony, Mozart would have been introduced to the principles of the organization and taken an oath of loyalty.

Involvement with Lodges

Following his initiation, Mozart continued to be an active member of the Masonic fraternity until his death in 1791.

He participated in various Masonic events and meetings and became closely associated with several Masonic lodges during his time in Vienna.

His choice to enter the “Zur Wohltätigkeit” lodge was influenced by his friendship with the lodge’s master, Baron Otto Heinrich von Gemmingen-Hornberg, and a shared devotion to Catholic tradition.

Mozart’s involvement with Freemasonry also extended to his family, with both his father, Leopold, and his grandfather being Masons.

Throughout his life, Mozart’s music and compositions often reflected the influence of Freemasonic ideology. In fact, some of his best-known works, such as “The Magic Flute,” contain Masonic symbols and themes.

Overall, his commitment to Freemasonry demonstrates the significant impact it had on his personal life and professional career.

Freemasonry’s Influence on Mozart’s Compositions

Freemasonry played a significant role in Mozart’s life, which is evident in his music. As members of this enlightened society, we can appreciate the influence that Freemasonry had on Mozart’s compositions.

In this section, we will explore the impact of Freemasonry on two of Mozart’s most notable pieces: The Magic Flute and Masonic Funeral Music.

The Magic Flute

The Magic Flute is undoubtedly one of Mozart’s most famous operas, and the influence of Freemasonry is apparent throughout. The storyline, characters, and symbolism are deeply rooted in Masonic teachings.

The opera’s protagonist, Prince Tamino, embarks on a quest for wisdom, truth, and enlightenment, which parallels the Masonic journey.

The number three, a significant number in Freemasonry, is prominently featured in the opera, appearing in various musical elements and stage settings.

Moreover, the characters of Sarastro, the wise and benevolent priest, and the Queen of the Night, who represents darkness and chaos, embody the essential Masonic values of light and the struggle against ignorance.

The librettist for The Magic Flute, Emanuel Schikaneder, was also a Freemason, further cementing the connection between the opera and Freemasonry.

Masonic Funeral Music

Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music is another composition that reveals the composer’s affiliation with Freemasonry.

He wrote this piece to honor two deceased members of his Masonic lodge.

The work is solemn, contemplative, and deeply emotional, reflecting the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.

The music itself features elements and motifs frequently associated with Freemasonry, such as the use of minor tonalities and dotted rhythms to evoke a sense of reverence and dignity.

The piece captures the intimate bond between Mozart and his fellow Freemasons, with whom he shared a connection that transcended the ordinary.

Freemasonry Themes in Mozart’s Life

As we delve into Mozart’s life, it becomes apparent that freemasonry played a significant role in shaping the composer’s work and relationships. Now, we will explore his connections with fellow Freemasons and the presence of Masonic symbolism in his compositions.

Relationships with Fellow Freemasons

Mozart’s involvement with Freemasonry began in 1784, quickly rising to the rank of Master Mason in 1785.

Throughout his life, Mozart forged close relationships with fellow Freemasons, many of whom were prominent figures in Vienna’s cultural and intellectual scene.

These connections likely influenced his work, as can be seen in the Masonic themes present in some of his most famous compositions.

Masonic Symbolism

Mozart’s compositions often contain elements of Masonic symbolism, in which he utilized specific musical phrases and forms that held semiotic meanings for the fraternity.

An example of this can be found in the initiation ceremony, where the candidate knocks on the door three times to ask for admittance.

This is expressed musically as a dotted figure, subtly incorporating Masonic tradition into his work.

As mentioned, His opera, The Magic Flute, is widely recognized as a Masonic allegory, further illustrating the depth of his engagement with Freemasonry.

Mozart’s Legacy in Freemasonry

One of the key insights into Mozart’s Masonic influence is the evident symbolism found in some of his compositions.

For example, his most famous opera, “The Magic Flute,” includes several Masonic themes and allegories. These elements showcase Mozart’s interest in the fraternity’s essential values, such as brotherhood, wisdom, and morality.

Moreover, Mozart composed specific Masonic music as well.

One of the notable examples is his work, “Maurerische Trauermusik” (Masonic Funeral Music), which was written for his brethren and demonstrates his commitment to the ideals of Freemasonry. This composition stands as a testimony to his involvement in the fraternity and his contribution to its music repertoire.

While the influence of Freemasonry on Mozart’s work is clear, it is also worth mentioning that he maintained a strong connection with the Catholic Church throughout his life.

This simultaneous association with both religious and secular institutions is a testament to his ability to appreciate different perspectives and stay true to his own beliefs.

Mozart’s legacy in Freemasonry is significant, with his membership in the fraternity and the inspiration he drew from its principles. His music serves to connect generations of listeners and performers to the Masonic ideals that were important to him. By looking at Mozart’s works through a Masonic lens, we gain a deeper understanding of his life, beliefs, and influences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which other composers were Freemasons?

Several composers besides Mozart were also reportedly involved in Freemasonry. Some of the most well-known examples include Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck. Although it’s not always possible to verify their membership with certainty, it is clear that many composers of that time were connected to the organization in some way.

How did Freemasonry affect Mozart’s beliefs?

Freemasonry had a significant influence on Mozart’s personal beliefs and worldview. As a Mason, he would have been exposed to ideas promoting tolerance, brotherly love, and personal growth through moral and intellectual development. It is believed that these values shaped his approach to composing music, particularly in his later works such as The Magic Flute, which contains many Masonic symbols and allegories.

What are some Freemason rules that Mozart might have followed?

As a Freemason, Mozart would have been expected to adhere to the organization’s moral and ethical principles. Some of these rules include practicing secrecy regarding the group’s activities, maintaining a strong sense of brotherhood among fellow members, and pursuing personal growth through a virtuous and moral life. Freemasonry encourages its members to constantly strive for self-improvement, something that likely resonated with Mozart’s own ambitions as a composer and artist.

In this comprehensive look into Freemasonry’s most privileged rank—the 33rd degree—I’ll introduce you to its most renowned members who have influenced pivotal moments in history.

Ready for an intriguing journey across centuries? Let’s go!”

Understanding Freemasonry

Freemasonry is a global fraternity that has stood the test of time for over five centuries, boasting more than six million members worldwide. This organization draws its roots from the stonemason guilds of medieval Europe and combines those ancient traditions with philosophical teachings.

Its rich history speaks volumes about how societies evolve, and it continues to capture the attention of modern researchers and history enthusiasts.

The craft’s symbolism, drawn largely from architectural tools used in masonry work – like the square and compass – carries profound metaphorical meanings revolving around personal growth, moral standards, virtue, equality, and charity among others.

Freemasons progress through three primary degrees: Entered Apprentice; Fellowcraft; Master Mason each representing different levels of personal development within their system.

The much-coveted 33rd Degree in Masonry stands as a symbol of not only mastery but also significant contributions to humanity.

The Significance of the 33rd Degree in Masonry

In the Masonic hierarchy, achieving the 33rd degree is a high honor conferred upon members who have made significant contributions to society or to Freemasonry in general. It’s an honorary degree granted by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite, one of several appendant bodies within Freemasonry.

The rank reflects immense dedication and commitment as it requires years of involvement and progressive advancement through Masonic teachings.

The number ’33’ itself holds symbolic significance in numerology and religious contexts, often associated with spiritual awareness and enlightenment. In this context, 33rd Degree Masons are considered ‘Illuminated’, bearers of tremendous responsibility.

Lights shining on their wisdom guide those under their mentorship while influencing major societal issues too, as evidenced by many influential figures throughout history being 33rd Degree Masons.

Therefore obtaining this revered status transcends conventional understanding; it mirrors a lifetime dedicated to promoting brotherhood, charity, and personal development – core values that Freemasonry hails since time immemorial!

Famous 33rd Degree Masons

Harry Truman, Benjamin Franklin, Simón Bolívar, Buzz Aldrin, and J. Edgar Hoover – these are just a few of the famous 33rd degree Masons who have left an indelible mark on history. Now, we’ll discover the secrets behind their Masonic membership and how it shaped their contributions to society.

Note that there are an estimated 160,000 members of the Scottish Rite worldwide, only around 4,000 hold this distinguished 33rd degree. Therefore, for the purposes of this article, we will only be exploring a selection of the most prominent individuals who have attained this prestigious rank.

Harry Truman: The 33rd President and Freemason

Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, held a long and deep-rooted connection with Freemasonry, one that extended far beyond his presidency. Truman’s journey in Masonry began in 1909, and his passion for the fraternity led him to the esteemed 33rd degree, a rank he achieved in 1945.

His Masonic values profoundly influenced his approach to leadership. Truman’s presidency was marked by his commitment to equality and fairness, principles inherent in Masonic teachings. During his tenure, he advocated for civil rights and social justice, echoing the Masonic ideals of brotherhood and universal equality.

Truman also held various leadership roles within the Masonic fraternity, including the prestigious position of Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri. He remains the only U.S. President to have served as a Grand Master, a testament to his devotion to Freemasonry.

The role of Freemasonry in Truman’s life and leadership offers valuable insights into how these ancient teachings can shape world leaders and, by extension, the course of history.

Truman’s legacy, as both a president and a Freemason, is a powerful reminder of the significant impact that Freemasonry has had on influential figures throughout history.

Benjamin Franklin: Founding Father and Freemason

Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s Founding Fathers, was more than just an influential statesman and inventor. He also played a significant role in the Freemasons as a member of Saint John’s Lodge in Philadelphia.

His Masonic history is intertwined with his contribution to forming our nation during the Revolutionary War era.

As a Leather Apron Club member too, he propagated principles akin to those of Freemasons, promoting fraternity and virtue over conflict and malice.

Combining intellectual prowess with Masonic principles, Franklin helped shape American History in more ways than we might realize.

Diving into the intriguing crossroads of history where Mormonism meets Freemasonry, I find myself on a quest: Was Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, also a Freemason?

To provide a well-rounded understanding, it is essential to examine the various connections between Smith, his influential role in the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Freemasonry.

By exploring these connections, I aim to provide a clear and neutral insight into the relationship between Mormonism and Freemasonry and determine whether Joseph Smith was, indeed, a Freemason.

Please note, throughout this article, I will use “LDS” as an abbreviation for “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” for the sake of brevity. Please understand that whenever you see “LDS,” it refers to this religious organization.

Was Joseph Smith A Freemason?

Joseph Smith was a Freemason. He was initiated in Nauvoo, Illinois, on March 15, 1842. Smith’s Freemasonry membership significantly influenced the Latter-Day Saint movement. Some rituals and symbols used in the LDS Church, particularly in temple ceremonies, bear similarities to Masonic traditions.

Joseph Smith was indeed a Freemason, but the complexity surrounding this topic continues to ignite debate. The intricate relationship between Mormonism and Freemasonry further adds to the controversy.

To unravel these tangled threads, we’ll delve into the most reliable historical documents and evidence in the following sections, bringing clarity to these intriguing relationships.

Early Connections, Smith Family, and Freemasonry

The relationship between Joseph Smith and Freemasonry started early in his life. In fact, his older brother, Hyrum, and possibly his father, were Freemasons while the family lived near Palmyra, New York.

During the late 1820s, the western New York region experienced a wave of anti-Masonic fervor.

Despite these sentiments, the links between Freemasonry and the Smith family would persist and later play a role in the development of the religious movement Joseph would found.

Through these early connections and familial influences, it becomes evident that Freemasonry played a significant role in the life of Joseph Smith and his family.

As we have explored these connections, the intertwined history of Freemasonry and the Latter-Day Saint movement becomes even more fascinating.

Mormonism and Freemasonry Similarities

Both Mormonism and Freemasonry share certain elements in rituals, symbols, and moral teachings.

Rituals and Symbols

Both Mormonism and Freemasonry incorporate rituals and symbols into their practices.

In Masonic ceremonies, various symbols are used to convey moral lessons and teach initiates about the fraternity’s principles.

Likewise, in Mormonism, symbols are prevalent in temple ceremonies and the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For example, the square and compass, symbols in Freemasonry, can be seen in some historical Mormon temple architecture.

Moral Teachings

The moral teachings of Freemasonry center around the development of personal integrity, honesty, and virtue, which are also key values within Mormonism.

Though the specific teachings may differ, both religious movements emphasize the importance of being upright, charitable, and striving for personal improvement.

This common ground forms a basis for some of the connections that exist between Mormonism and Freemasonry.

I need to explain more to avoid misunderstanding the relationship between Mormonism and Freemasonry. Although they have similarities as above, it should be noted that they are two different organizations. Therefore, they also have differences in beliefs and practices.

Joseph Smith’s Initiation into Freemasonry

Nauvoo, an early settlement of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was notable for its Freemason members, including Joseph Smith, who joined the organization there.

Process and Ceremony

Joseph Smith became a Freemason in Nauvoo on March 15, 1842. He was initiated at the Nauvoo Masonic Lodge and participated in the traditional ceremonies associated with the organization.

The ceremonies and rituals Joseph Smith experienced were common to Freemasons at that time.

Prominent Freemasons in Nauvoo

There were several significant figures who were Freemasons in Nauvoo during the time of Joseph Smith.

Some of these individuals were closely related to the early Church, including Joseph Smith’s older brother, Hyrum, and some of the first five Latter-day Saint prophets, such as Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Lorenzo Snow.

All of these men were members of Freemasonry and would later hold influential roles within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Nauvoo served as a meeting place for notable Freemasons, and the connections they established during this time would influence the future development of the Church.

Impact of Freemasonry on LDS Church

Now, we will focus on the influence of Freemasonry on the temple endowment and its connections to church leadership.

Influence on Temple Endowment

It is interesting to note that the LDS temple ceremonies were introduced just a few months after Smith’s initiation into Freemasonry.

As mentioned, there are certain similarities between the Masonic rituals and the LDS temple ceremonies.

Despite these similarities, it is important to understand that the endowment ceremony also contains unique teachings and doctrines specific to the LDS faith.

Masonry and Church Leadership

Several early LDS leaders were also members of the Freemasonry fraternity.

In fact, the first five Latter-day prophets – Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Lorenzo Snow – were all Freemasons. They joined the fraternity while living in Nauvoo with the Latter-day Saints.

It is worth mentioning that this connection to Freemasonry was not just limited to the early leaders, as many prominent church leaders throughout history have also been connected to the Fraternity.

Controversies and Reactions

I have come across various controversies and reactions regarding Joseph Smith’s involvement with Freemasonry. In this section, I will discuss two major controversies: Accusations of Plagiarism and Excommunication of Freemasons from the LDS Church. My aim is to provide an informed and unbiased perspective on these topics.

Accusations of Plagiarism

Many critics have accused Joseph Smith of plagiarizing Masonic rituals for the creation of temple ordinances in the Latter-day Saints Church.

It is well-documented that Joseph Smith and other early LDS leaders were members of the Freemasons. However, no concrete evidence has been found to definitively prove that Smith directly plagiarized Masonic rituals.

Both Mormon temple ceremonies and Masonic rituals contain symbolic elements that can be traced back to ancient religious and spiritual practices.

Nevertheless, similarities between the two, such as the use of aprons, handshakes, and symbolic gestures, have raised suspicions among critics.

While it is possible that Joseph Smith may have been influenced by Masonic ideas, I believe it’s important to consider the nuances and complexities of both sets of practices before drawing definitive conclusions.

Excommunication of Freemasons from LDS Church

Another controversy revolves around the excommunication of Freemasons from the LDS Church.

In the early days of the LDS Church, many high-ranking officials, including Joseph Smith, were active Freemasons.

However, sometime after Smith’s death, the LDS Church began distancing itself from Freemasonry, leading to instances of excommunication.

The motivations for these excommunications are not entirely clear. Speculations suggest that concerns over allegiance and loyalty, as well as the perception of competing interests or beliefs, may have played a role.

While there is no official LDS Church statement on this issue, it is essential for an informed discussion, keeping in mind the historical context of these events as well as the evolving relationship between the two organizations over the years.

Conclusion

So, in this article, we have examined the relationship between Joseph Smith and Freemasonry, and it is evident that there is a historical connection between the two.

Smith’s older brother, Hyrum, and possibly his father were Freemasons while the family lived near Palmyra, New York. Moreover, Joseph Smith became a Freemason himself and remained one until his death.

As for the relationship between Masonic lodge rites and Latter-day Saint temple ordinances, there are some similarities, although these should not be interpreted as plagiarism or imitation. Both institutions emphasize morality, the importance of ritual, and a strong sense of community.

However, the Latter-day Saint temple ceremonies have a distinctly theological focus with sacred covenants and the central themes of redemption, salvation, and exaltation, while Freemasonry is more focused on fraternity, moral improvement, and community service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Joseph Smith’s Freemasonry influence the founding of Mormonism?

Yes, it is widely believed that Joseph Smith’s involvement with Freemasonry had an influence on the founding of Mormonism. However, it is important to note that the teachings of Mormonism are seen as distinct from Masonic principles. While there are similarities between the two, they hold different beliefs and practices.

Was the Endowment Ceremony influenced by Freemasonry?

There are similarities between the LDS Endowment Ceremony and Freemasonry rituals, and it is thought that Joseph Smith’s exposure to Masonic rituals influenced the development of the Endowment Ceremony. For example, certain symbols, hand gestures, and clothing resemble those used in Masonic ceremonies. Nonetheless, the theological context and meaning behind these rituals in the LDS faith are different from Freemasonry.

What Masonic symbols are present in LDS temple architecture and ceremonies?

There are several Masonic symbols present in LDS temple architecture and ceremonies. Some examples include the use of the square and compass, the beehive, and the handshake. Additionally, certain clothing and hand gestures used in LDS ceremonies are similar to those in Masonic rituals. However, it should be emphasized that these symbols and practices hold different meanings and contexts within the LDS faith compared to Freemasonry.

How did Joseph Smith’s Freemason membership impact his relationships with non-Mormons?

Joseph Smith’s Freemason membership caused tension between the LDS community and non-Mormon Masons in Illinois and the surrounding areas. After his death, some Church members believed that Joseph might have been invoking a Masonic call of distress in his final moments, which further fueled feelings of betrayal between the groups. In October 1844, the Grand Lodge severed its ties with the Latter-day Saints.

Who Was the First Freemason in The Bible?

While several biblical characters are associated with Freemasonry, there’s no consensus on the first. Traditional Masonic ritual claims Hiram Abiff, architect of King Solomon’s Temple, as one. Others include Tubal Cain, considered the father of Smithcraft, Noah and his sons, and even Jesus.

Each character contributes to the rich tapestry of Freemason history, but in this article, we’ll spotlight Hiram Abiff’s intriguing life and legacy.

Biblical Origins of Freemasonry

The first known Freemason mentioned in the Bible is Hiram Abiff, a skilled architect who played a significant role in the construction of King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. Hiram, also known as the Master Builder, is often regarded as the foundation of Freemasonry due to his expertise in the craft and his dedication to the project.

Hiram Abiff was commissioned by King Solomon to work on the temple, which was completed in the year 957 BCE. The masonic rituals are partly based on the story of Hiram and his craftsmanship and partly on the biblical accounts of King Solomon and his father, David, who united the Israelites and captured Jerusalem.

During their initiation, Freemasons participate in a ceremony that reenacts the story of Hiram Abiff. The ritual progresses in stages, with each advancement exposing the Masons to new teachings and moral lessons. This ritual, along with the biblical context, has led to Freemasonry being perceived as a continuation of the ancient builder’s tradition, connecting its members to the history and symbolism of the construction of Solomon’s Temple.

The biblical roots of Freemasonry serve as an essential foundation for the organization’s teachings and values, fostering a sense of connection between the members and the ancient builder’s tradition. Although Freemasonry has evolved over time, its origins in the Bible continue to inspire its members and guide their pursuits toward moral discipline, fellowship, and mutual assistance.

Hiram Abiff: The First Freemason in the Bible

In this section, we will delve deeper into Hiram Abiff, including aspects such as the building of King Solomon’s Temple, the legend, and the Hiramic Drama.

Building King Solomon’s Temple

Hiram Abiff is a central character in Masonic tradition and is considered the first Freemason in the Bible. He was the chief architect of King Solomon’s Temple and held the secrets of the Master Masons. Hailing from the tribe of Naphtali, Hiram was appointed by King Solomon himself to oversee the construction of this sacred Temple.

The Temple was built with the assistance of skilled craftsmen who were organized by Hiram. His expertise in architecture and the secrets of the craft enabled him to create the magnificent structure that would become a centerpiece of ancient Israel.

The Legend

The legend of Hiram Abiff tells of his dedication to his craft and the protection of the Master Masons’ secrets. According to the story, three ruffians sought to force Hiram to reveal these secrets. However, Hiram valiantly refused, preferring death over betrayal. The ruffians ultimately murdered Hiram within the Temple grounds.

Hiram’s dedication and principles have resonated with Freemasons for centuries, and his story serves as an important lesson for members of the fraternity.

Hiramic Drama

The Hiramic Drama is a ritualistic reenactment of the story of Hiram Abiff presented to candidates during the third degree in Freemasonry. Its purpose is to communicate the core values and principles of the fraternity, such as loyalty, integrity, and a commitment to one’s craft.

During the ritual, the candidate takes on the role of Hiram Abiff, reliving various aspects of the story, including Hiram’s interactions with King Solomon and his ultimate refusal to reveal the secrets of Master Masons. This experience is crucial for the candidate’s understanding of what it means to be a Mason and the importance of adhering to the principles taught in the legend.

Through the story of Hiram Abiff and the Hiramic Drama, Freemasons continue to be inspired by the values and principles exemplified by this legendary figure from the Bible. His dedication to his craft and steadfast commitment to protecting knowledge maintain a lasting influence in the fraternity.

Freemasonry Practices and Biblical References

Freemasonry is a fraternal organization with roots in the European trade guilds. Its members, known as Masons, meet in lodges and participate in rituals that are based on the biblical account of a man named Hiram, whom Solomon commissioned to work on the temple in Jerusalem. Freemasonry practices, including the initiation and progression through various Masonic degrees, are wrapped in symbolism that often draws from the Bible.

One of the most well-known Freemasonic symbols is the “square and compasses,” which stand for the organization’s guiding principles. The square represents morality, while the compasses signify spirituality. These icons have been associated with the tools used by the ancient stonemasons to build Solomon’s temple. The All-Seeing Eye is another prominent symbol in Freemasonry, which signifies the omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent nature of the Supreme Being who watches over all Masons. This concept is supported by biblical references, such as Psalm 33:18, which states, “Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear Him.”

In Freemasons’ ritual, Hiram Abiff, a skilled master craftsman from the Bible who played a significant role in building Solomon’s temple, is invoked as the central figure. The story of Hiram Abiff is taken from the Old Testament, specifically from the books of Kings and Chronicles. According to the scriptural accounts, Hiram was an expert in metallurgy and was responsible for crafting various items for the temple, including the two large pillars of bronze.

The importance of the relationship between Freemasonry and the Bible goes beyond symbolism and rituals. The Holy Bible is often considered one of the three great lights of Freemasonry, along with the square and compasses. In many lodges, the Bible is placed on an altar, symbolizing the importance of its teachings. Freemasons are encouraged to study the text to develop a deeper understanding of its moral and spiritual lessons. Freemasonry is not a religious organization but embraces the idea of a Supreme Being, respecting the different religious beliefs of its members.

The precise identity of the first Freemason mentioned in the Bible is up for debate, as there isn’t a direct reference to a person being a Mason. However, the central character in Freemasonic rituals, Hiram Abiff, has a significant connection to the building of Solomon’s temple, which is a crucial story in both the Bible and Freemasonry.

Modern Masonic Interpretations of Hiram Abiff

Hiram Abiff is a significant figure in Freemasonry, often regarded as the central character of the fraternity’s allegorical teachings. In Masonic lore, he is presented as the chief architect of King Solomon’s Temple and is referred to as the Widow’s Son. Widely regarded as a driving force behind the formation of the Freemason fraternity, Hiram Abiff’s story plays an essential role in the initiation of Masonic candidates during the third-degree ceremony.

Despite the biblical accounts mentioning a figure called Hiram, the Freemason version of Hiram Abiff’s story is mostly exclusive to Masonic teachings. This tale has three ruffians, who represent ignorance, ambition, and tyranny, confronting Hiram within King Solomon’s Temple. They fail to obtain the Master Masons’ secrets from him and, as a result, kill him. The death and eventual resurrection of Hiram Abiff in the narrative represent the triumph of wisdom, virtue, and enlightenment over the forces of ignorance.

Throughout the ages, historians and scholars have debated the origin and the role Hiram Abiff plays in Masonic culture. The allegorical tale holds vital significance for the fraternity as it teaches valuable lessons about perseverance, loyalty, and the quest for knowledge. The character of Hiram Abiff symbolizes the qualities that every Freemason aspires to possess and exemplify in their own lives.

The connection between Hiram Abiff, Freemasonry, and King Solomon’s Temple is also considered an essential part of the fraternity’s esoteric beliefs. Many theories have been proposed about the so-called “secret knowledge” possessed by Hiram Abiff, which led to the construction of the unique structure of the temple. The legendary figure of Hiram Abiff thus stands as a bridging element, connecting the ancient wisdom of the temple with the modern Freemason’s pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement.

It’s essential to recognize that the story of Hiram Abiff in its Masonic context is an allegory designed to impart moral and philosophical teachings. This narrative has undoubtedly played a crucial part in shaping the fraternity’s principles and beliefs, allowing Hiram Abiff to attain the iconic status he holds in the world of Freemasonry today.

Debate on the First Freemason in the Bible

There is a debate among scholars and researchers about the identity of the first Freemason mentioned in the Bible. Some argue that it was Abraham based on the story of Genesis Chapter 49. In this chapter, Jacob blesses his twelve sons, and the story then continues through Abraham’s life. Abraham is considered to be the first Freemason by some because he was a pious man.

On the other hand, some researchers focus on the story of the construction of Solomon’s Temple as the most significant connection between Freemasonry and the Bible. They argue that Hiram Abiff, a skilled worker sent to King Solomon by King Hiram of Tyre, was the first Freemason due to his expertise in building the temple. Freemasons consider Hiram Abiff a central figure in their lore and rituals, linking their organization to the temple’s construction.

There is also the argument that the first Freemason in the Bible is not explicitly mentioned, but can be inferred from the symbolism and teachings derived from biblical texts. Since Freemasonry is rich in symbolism and allegory, it might be difficult to pinpoint a specific individual as the first biblical Freemason.

It is essential to remember that the ** origins and historical connections of Freemasonry are often unclear and debated**. The organization’s connection to the Bible is part of this larger debate, and it is crucial to approach the subject with an open mind and a desire for understanding. While some might hold strong opinions on who the first Freemason in the Bible was, it is wise to acknowledge the complexity and contextual nature of this discussion.

Conclusion

Determining the first Freemason in the Bible proves complex due to varied interpretations.

From a neutral perspective, we provided insight into potential candidates like Hiram Abiff, Abraham, and others, each with their unique associations to Freemasonry.

This exploration aims to enhance understanding, and I trust it offers a valuable perspective on this intriguing topic.

Only a handful of people in human history can claim to have stepped foot on the moon. And Brother Edwin Eugene [Buzz] Aldrin is widely appreciated within the Craft as the first Mason on the moon. As a member of the Apollo 11 crew, Aldrin was part of the pioneering craft that pushed the boundaries of what humankind thought was feasibly possible, and created a legacy that will encourage and foster scientific discovery for generations.

As the world watched on, Buzz Aldrin and his NASA colleague Neil Armstrong took what would become known as small steps for man, and giant steps for mankind on July 20th, 1969. Buzz was actually the pilot of Apollo 11, and was responsible for steering his crew to the historical moon landing. While brothers have been responsible for many of the most incredible feats here on earth, they’ve also been responsible for remarkable feats in outer space, as Aldrin’s remarkable achievements go to show.

Buzz Aldrin’s remarkable life began in January 1930, when he was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, and later went on to receive a PhD in Astronautics from M.I.T in 1963. As a veteran of the Korean War, he is also a decorated American military man, and is credited with two enemy kills during his tour.

He was first initiated into Freemasonry at Oak Park Lodge No. 864 in Alabama, and was raised at Lawrence N. Greenleaf Lodge, No. 169 in Colorado. He is also a member of York Rite and the Arabia Shrine Temple of Houston. Before joining the crew of the Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin had an unusual request. He approached the Grand Master of Texas and requested to open a representation of the Grand Lodge on the moon.

His request was welcomed and accepted, and therefore Buzz Aldrin was able to establish Masonic territorial jurisdiction in outer space. He signed and carried a special deputation from the Grand Master of Texas and carried it with him to the moon. Such was Aldrin’s commitment to the Craft that he had the foresight to expand the boundaries of Freemasonry to outer space; a remarkable feat for the fraternity.

What’s more, Aldrin also carried a handmade silk Masonic flag with him on his journey to the moon, which was embroidered with the following words:

“Supreme Council, 33-degree, Southern Jurisdiction, USA.”

The flag is now located in the archives of the House of the Temple, as Aldrin took it to Washington D.C. and presented it to Grand Commander Luther Smith in 1969, a few months after returning to earth. You can watch the following video to see the flag and learn a little more about its unique and interesting story.

It’s fair to say that Aldrin is one of Freemasonry’s most iconic and treasured flag-bearers. He has received many awards and accolades throughout his life, and has been widely celebrated for his contribution to America’s space program. His first award, however, was bestowed upon him thanks to his efforts in the Korean War, after which he was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal in 1969.

For his space expeditions, brother Buzz Aldrin was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal by President Johnson in 1966 for the Gemini space program, and then the NASA Distinguished Service Medal following the completion of the Apollo 11 mission in 1970. He was also inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1982. He received the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award, presented to him form the Space Foundation in 2006, the Foundation’s highest and most prestigious award.

Academically, Aldrin supplemented his PhD with honorary degrees from six colleges and universities, and was named as the Chancellor of the International Space University in 2015. His most recent award came in 2019, when he was awarded the Starmus Festival’s Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication for Lifetime Achievement.

Evidently, few Masonic brothers can rival the decorated career of Buzz Aldrin, and his contribution to science and discovery have been rightly recognized and rewarded. However, like many other Masons, Aldrin is known as a kind and humble man, and his incredible lifetime achievements haven’t distracted him from his remarkable philanthropic and altruistic contributions.

Within Freemasonry, Brother Buzz Aldrin is rightly a source of inspiration for many within the Craft, and his foray into outer space is source of true pride to all within the fraternity. While he is more commonly regarded as one of the first men on the moon, he will always be regarded by the fraternity as the first Mason on the moon; a title that we’re sure he’s incredibly proud of.
For more information about Brother Buzz Aldrin’s incredible life and achievements beyond Freemasonry, you can visit his Wikipedia page by clicking here.

Alexander Fleming was born in Lochfield, Ayrshire in August 1881, not far from the birthplace of Brother Robert Burns. He attended school at Kilmarnock Academy before moving to London, where he worked in a shopping office before attending the medical school at St Mary’s Hospital.

He trained as a doctor at the London school and qualified with distinction in 1906. His research at the University of London was disrupted by World War I, during which he served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps. By the end of the war, he returned to his research at St Mary’s.

He was interested in ‘natural bacterial action

Fleming’s research was interested in exploring the natural bacterial action of blood in antiseptics. By 1928, he discovered that mold had developed on a set of dishes he was using in his lab, which created a bacteria-free circle around itself. He would go onto name the substance as penicillin.

With the help of scientists Howard Florey and Ernst Chan, penicillin was further developed so it could be produced as a drug. By the 1940s, penicillin was being mass produced in America and began to change the way that infections were treated.

The awards began to flow after his discovery

It wasn’t long before Fleming was widely recognized and awarded for his life-changing discovery. In 1944, he was given a knighthood by the queen, and he was made emeritus professor of bacteriology at the University of London in 1948.

He went onto receive doctorates and degrees from more than 25 European and American universities, and he shared the Nobel Prize with Florey and Chan in 1945.

Brother Alexander Fleming

Following his move south, Alexander Fleming became interested in Freemasonry during his studies at St Mary’s College in London. He was initiated into Sancta Maria Lodge No 2682 in London in 1909. He served as a Past Junior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1942.

After his remarkable contribution to science and medicine, brother Alexander Fleming passed away on 11 March 1955. He is buried at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

We’re constantly in awe of the contributions that Masons have had throughout history. Fleming’s discovery of penicillin ranks as one of the most significant medical feats of the twentieth century, and the fact that he was a Mason is a source of great pride for the fraternity.
