Bro. Albert S. Hovan, P.D.D.G.M. (83-05-28)

The Crusades have no relation to Freemasonry, even though there are concordant bodies which base their rituals on the Crusades and have taken the name of the original Crusaders, the Knights Templar. Among the historic Crusaders there were in fact two groups, first being The Religious Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, and later the Order of the Knights Templar. In the area of discipline and administration, both orders were military.

The Religious Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem started with the establishment of a small hospital or hospice in Jerusalem, to treat pilgrims visiting the holy city, early in the 6th century A.D. This hospice existed for 400 years until it was destroyed by the Caliph Al Hakim. His method of converting Christians to the Muslim faith was by the sword.

With the help of pious merchants the hospice was rebuilt. The new hospital was served by a body of men who formed themselves into a brotherhood pledged to if protect the poor, the infirm and the stricken”; this brotherhood was to become known as the Religious Order of the Hospital of Saint John. It had been established only a few years when the Turkomans occupied Jerusalem and barred the pilgrims from the Holy Sepulchre and treated them with great cruelty. This led to the beginning of the Crusades and the recapture of the city on July 12, 1099. Twenty years after the fall of Jerusalem a small group of knights set themselves the task of defending the routes taken by the pilgrims leading from Jaffa to Jerusalem. They formed themselves into a new religious fraternity and, forsaking the world of knightly chivalry (“…of which human favour and not Jesus Christ was the cause”), they bound themselves to the rules of the Benedictines. Initially they were known as the “poor fellow soldiers of Jesus Christ”, and in consequence of the service they rendered to Christians, King Baldwyn II allocated them part of the Royal Palace south of the Temple of the Lord and the large courtyard between that and the former site of the Temple of King Solomon. Thence forth the Order was known as the “Knighthood of the Temple of King Solomon”, or the “Knights Templar”. Hugh de Payens was chosen first Master of the Templars and in 1127 he journeyed to Europe and secured the support of St.Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, who prepared a code of statutes for the proper government and control of the military and religious activities of the Templar Order. The Order prospered and grew in strength and after confirmation of their statutes by Papal Bull, they developed into a rich and widely known international Order.

It was wealth that brought the end of the Knights Templar. King Phillip of France coveted the riches and land of the Knights Templar, and to obtain them, he conducted a campaign of rumours and accusations against Jacques de Molay who was the Grand Master, and his officers. After a cruel inquisition, those who had survived it so far, along with Jacques de Molay were burnt at the stake and the Order was disbanded by the Pope after an existence of less than 100 years.

The order of Saint John of Jerusalem prospered and grew. The knights moved from Palestine to Cyprus, were chased out of Cyprus and went to Rhodes. They were again beaten by the Turks and were without a home until the Pope used his influence to persuade the German emperor Charles V. to transfer the island of Malta to the Order. There they remained until Malta was overrun by Napoleon. The Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem was disbanded in England by Henry VIII. 300 years later, Queen Victoria restored it under the name of the “Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St.John of Jerusalem”, of which Queen Elizabeth 11 is the present Sovereign Head. The ideals nurtured by the knights of old are as fresh today as then, for the men and women of St.John’s Ambulance Brigade, a foundation of the Order which came into being in 1877, are indeed as dedicated to the care of the sick and injured as were the Hospitallers of former times, It was in Malta where many knights were initiated into Freemasonry. In an endeavor to stop the spread of Freemasonry in Malta, the Grand Master of the Order banned six knights from the island but meetings were known to -have still taken place. Even though the knights of St.John continued to patronize Masonry, no proof exists that the Order was in any way connected with Freemasonry.

Are the Knights Templar heroes, villains, or perhaps both? This ancient and prestigious order leaves a legacy awash in mystery and debate.

In this article, we’ll explore their impressive accomplishments as well as their dark controversies – unraveling whether these holy warriors should be celebrated or condemned.

Let’s delve into this dramatic chapter of history together!

Reasons Why the Knights Templar Were Regarded as Good

The Knights Templar were regarded as good due to their creation of a new model of holy warrior, their discipline and dedication, refusal to surrender, strategic thinking and skilled fighting abilities, provision of financial services, understanding of Islamic institutions, and continued influence even after their downfall.

Created a New Model of Holy Warrior

The Knights Templar carried the duality of being holy warriors, a concept previously unknown. Breaking away from the traditional chivalric code only befitting nobility, they were religious defenders dedicated to protecting Christian pilgrims venturing to the Holy Land.

As military charity guardians, these Christian knights epitomized discipline and courage, which in part was fueled by their vow of poverty.

Armed with diverse weaponry expertise in lance, sword, and crossbow skills paired with their steadfast commitment to obedience and chastity instilled an unyielding spirit within them that would redefine warfare dynamics for centuries ahead.

The vigor displayed by these crusade warriors against Muslim assailants seized global attention as a paradigm shift; a new model of the holy warrior had been birthed through the Templars’ resilient combat methods and strategic prowess on battlegrounds.

Disciplined and Dedicated

Arguably, one of the foundations of the Knights Templar’s prowess was their disciplined and dedicated nature. Aligning with monastic principles, they took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience; fundamentally marrying religious fervor with martial proficiency.

Their rigorous training regimen honed them into a methodical force that bore a resemblance to an era when Roman troops reigned supreme in discipline and strategy.

This exemplary conduct did not go unnoticed by contemporary society; their rapid popularity expansion was a testament to this recognition from common folk and nobility alike.

Trained meticulously for combat conditions, these holy warriors were zealously devoted to fulfilling their duties without surrender.

This dedication went beyond the battlefield as they adopted stringent discipline in day-to-day life making them respected figures revered for both chivalrous honor along with military expertise.

Refused to Surrender

One of the most admired traits about the Knights Templar was their unyielding tenacity. They were renowned for their absolute refusal to surrender, even when confronted with overwhelming odds.

This committed resolve showcased not only their distinct courage but also mirrored their unwavering devotion to their faith and mission. Like a disciplined battalion resolute in its purpose, they held firm, maintaining an enigmatic disposition that oftentimes confounded enemies on the battlefield.

No matter what adversity they faced, whether it be territorial battles or accusations of heresy by King Philip leading to their downfall, these influential holy warriors remained steadfast in upholding their oath of chastity and poverty while continuing to serve as resolute fellow soldiers of Jesus Christ.

The strength drawn from refusal to capitulate under duress is part of what makes them such extraordinary figures within history’s annals.

Strategic Thinkers and Skilled Fighters

The Knights Templar were not only fierce warriors, but they were also strategic thinkers and skilled fighters. Renowned for their combat skills, this military order was highly trained and equipped with weaponry expertise such as lances, swords, and crossbows.

They knew how to use these weapons effectively and were well-armored. Established in Jerusalem in the 12th century, the Knights Templar saw themselves not only as devout individuals but also as warriors harnessed to God’s will.

Their tactical thinking and deadly combat abilities made them one of the most formidable forces in history. Additionally, apart from being great fighters, they played a pivotal role in European finances during their time by operating the world’s first bank.

Provided Financial Services

The Knights Templar were not only skilled warriors, but they were also pioneers in the world of finance. Renowned for their financial services, they excelled in banking and provided expertise in managing finances.

Their efficiency in banking made them accessible to all, regardless of social status or religious affiliation. In fact, their banking practices were so groundbreaking that they operated the world’s first bank during the 13th century.

The Knights Templar’s involvement extended beyond serving Christian pilgrims; they opened their services to the general public as well, which further solidified their reputation as protectors and financiers.

Understood Islamic Institutions

The Knights Templar were not only skilled fighters but also had a deep understanding of Islamic institutions. This knowledge was gained through their interactions with Muslim cultures during the Crusades.

The Templars recognized the importance of learning from their enemies and incorporated elements of Islamic practices into their own rituals and traditions. This cultural exchange allowed them to better understand their adversaries, adapt their strategies, and ultimately become more effective holy warriors.

Their understanding of Islamic institutions set them apart from other military orders of the time, making the Knights Templar highly respected by both allies and foes alike.

In addition to being fierce fighters, the Knights Templar also provided financial services that were innovative for their time. They created an early form of banking system, similar to what we know today, providing loans to nobles and funding major construction projects such as cathedrals.

Their extensive network of agricultural estates throughout Europe further enhanced their financial influence. These ventures not only solidified the order’s power but also contributed to economic development in medieval society.

Remained Influential Even After Their Downfall

The Knights Templar’s influence did not simply vanish with their disbandment. Despite facing persecution and betrayal, the Templars continued to have a lasting impact on medieval society and warfare.

Their innovative strategies, highly disciplined training, and architectural contributions left an indelible mark. Moreover, the enigmatic aura surrounding the order has fueled speculation about hidden treasures and their alleged survival to this day.

Popular culture has also embraced them as protagonists in tales of mystery and adventure. Even today, the Knights Templar captivates Freemasons, historians, and enthusiasts alike with their enduring legacy.

Reasons Why the Knights Templar Were Regarded as Bad

The Knights Templar faced accusations of arrogance and corruption, leading to their persecution and betrayal. Discover why these allegations tarnished their reputation by delving into the controversies surrounding this famous military order.

Accused of Arrogance and Corruption

The Knights Templar, once revered as valiant defenders of Christianity, were not without their flaws. Accused of arrogance and corruption, these allegations tainted their reputation and ultimately led to their downfall.

As the order grew in wealth and power, they became increasingly arrogant, displaying a sense of superiority over others. Additionally, rumors of corruption within the ranks fueled speculation about unethical practices and dishonest dealings.

These accusations cast a shadow over the Knights Templar’s legacy and continue to spark scholarly debates among Freemasons, researchers, and history enthusiasts today.

Faced Persecution and Betrayal

The Knights Templar, despite their reputation as noble warriors, faced significant persecution and betrayal throughout history. Accused of heresy and immorality by King Philip after the Muslims re-conquered the Holy Land in the 13th century, their decline can be attributed to growing arrogance and straying from their original purpose as soldiers of Jesus Christ.

This led to them being denounced to the Inquisition after someone falsely claimed to reveal their secrets. The relentless persecution they endured ultimately contributed to their demise, tarnishing their once-revered image as holy warriors.

These historical events highlight how external forces played a pivotal role in shaping the negative perception surrounding the Knights Templar.

Accused of Heresy and Immorality

The Knights Templar were plagued with accusations of heresy and immorality, tarnishing their reputation in the eyes of many. King Philip accused them of deviating from their original purpose as noble defenders of Christianity, leading to their downfall after the Muslims re-conquered the Holy Land in the 13th century.

These charges included idol worship and engaging in immoral sexual acts, which greatly damaged their image. Many Templars were tortured into giving false confessions, further adding to the allegations against them.

The accusations of heresy and immorality ultimately led to the demise of this once-revered order.

Disbanded and Dissolved by The Pope

In 1312, the Knights Templar faced a shocking turn of events when they were disbanded and dissolved by Pope Clement V. This decision came about despite the Pope’s personal belief that the order was not guilty of heresy.

The disbandment followed a series of trials and accusations against the Templars, which ultimately led to their downfall. While it is debated whether they were truly guilty or not, this event marked a significant turning point in their history and contributed to the controversial reputation that surrounds them to this day.

The Legacy and Influence of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar had a profound impact on medieval society and warfare, shaping the course of history through their participation in the Crusades and their innovative military strategies.

The Templars were admired for their martial skills, which made them highly effective in defending Christian holy sites. Their influence extended beyond the battlefield as well – they were pioneers in financial services and played a significant role in shaping the European economy during that time.

Today, their historical legacy continues to spark intrigue and fascination among Freemasons, researchers, and history enthusiasts alike.

Role in The Crusades

However, they soon became much more than just guardians of pilgrimage routes. The Templars, known for their disciplined and skilled fighting abilities, were at the forefront of battles throughout the Crusades.

They displayed unwavering bravery and dedication as they fought alongside other Christian armies against Muslim forces in an attempt to regain control over Jerusalem and other important holy sites.

Friday the 13th Superstitions

The superstition surrounding Friday the 13th has deep cultural roots in Western society and is widely associated with the Knights Templar. According to historical accounts, on October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar, accusing them of crimes that were “horrible to contemplate.” This event is believed to be the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition which is considered unlucky.

What Is the Knights Templar?

The Knights Templar, officially known as The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, were a unique combination of knightly warriors and religious monks during the Middle Ages.

This Catholic medieval military order established in 1119 was devoted to both martial prowess and monastic life. These highly trained knights took vows similar to those made by monks — poverty, chastity, obedience — but their primary role was to provide protection for Christian pilgrims traveling to holy sites in the Middle East.

Clad in distinctive white mantles adorned with a red cross, they asserted a powerful presence throughout Western Europe and the Levant from their headquarters initially based in Jerusalem then moved to Acre.

At its height, this formidable organization not only commanded respect on battlefields but also wielded significant financial influence through banking systems it innovated across Europe.

Origins of the Knights Templar

The roots of the Knights Templar trace back to 1119 in Jerusalem, a period riddled with religious conflicts and crusades. In this tumultuous era, seven knights spearheaded by Hugh of Payns, also known as Hugues de Payens, made an unyielding vow to protect Christian pilgrims journeying through the Holy Land.

Their noble mission garnered recognition from Baldwin II, then king of Jerusalem, who offered them residence in his palace on the Temple Mount – an act that cemented their association with the iconic biblical temple and lent them their now-famous moniker “Templars”.

The group’s influence expanded rapidly, both militarily and financially. This quick growth led to official recognition as a military order by Pope Honorius II just ten years later in 1129.

They were considered a vital extension of the Cistercians – a robust Catholic monastic order renowned for its keen advocacy for reform within Christian societies across medieval Europe.

Resolute defenders of faith on one hand and pioneers of modern banking on the other, these were indeed formidable early days for what would become one of history’s most enigmatic orders—the Knights Templar.

Who Started the Knights Templar?

Hugh of Payns, a noble from the Champagne region of France, is credited as the founding figure behind the establishment of the Knights Templar. Along with six other knights, Hugh took monastic vows to protect Christian pilgrims journeying through Jerusalem in 1119.

This small but committed group formed what would later become recognized by Pope Innocent II in 1129 as a Catholic medieval military order known for their martial prowess and dedication to safeguarding Christian holy sites.

Backed by notable allies such as Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent Cistercian monk, they sought support from both nobility and common folk across Western Europe to sustain their mission in the Levant.

Hugh’s leadership played an essential role in shaping this military-monastic organization that dramatically impacted Middle Eastern history during the Crusades era.

Foundation and Early History of Knights Templar

The foundation of the Knights Templar dates back to 1119 when seven knights, led by Hugh of Payns, established the order with a mission to defend Christian pilgrims and holy sites in the Middle East.

The Crusades and the Role of Knights Templar

The Crusades were a series of holy wars fought between the 11th and 13th centuries, primarily to regain control of Christian holy sites in the Middle East. The Knights Templar played an important role in these military campaigns.

As highly skilled warriors and devoted guardians of Christianity, they fought alongside other Crusader armies to secure key strategic locations such as Jerusalem and Acre. Their presence on the battlefield was formidable, earning them a reputation for bravery and tactical expertise.

The Knights Templar not only fought in battles but also provided vital support to their fellow Crusaders. They acted as protectors for Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land, ensuring their safety along treacherous routes plagued by bandits and rival forces.

Additionally, the Templars established themselves as medieval bankers, offering interest-gaining loans and providing financial assistance to fund the Crusades.

The Templars as Medieval Bankers

The Knights Templar were not only formidable warriors but also skilled and trusted bankers during the medieval period. With their vast wealth and extensive network of properties, the Templars became proficient in financial matters.

They invested their money in revenue-producing assets like farms, vineyards, mills, churches, and townships. Additionally, they offered banking services such as interest-gaining loans, deposits, and transfers between different convents.

Their involvement in banking significantly grew over time to the extent that they became an important element in the financial structure of medieval Europe.

Despite the church’s prohibition on charging interest, the Templars found ways to circumvent this restriction while serving as repositories for cash, jewels, and important documents.

Organization and Recruitment within the Knights Templar

The organization of the Knights Templar was carefully structured, with a hierarchical system that included ranks such as Grand Master, Preceptor, and Commander.

Uniform and Rules

The Knights Templar adhered to a strict set of rules and regulations, both in their appearance and conduct. Their uniform consisted of a white surcoat and cloak worn over their armor, adorned with a bold red cross on the left breast.

This distinct attire helped identify them as members of the order during battles and other activities. The rules they followed were equally stringent, including vows of obedience to the Grand Master, regular attendance at church services, and the practice of celibacy.

Meal times were communal affairs where silence was observed, promoting discipline and unity among the knights. These rules not only upheld the ideals of chivalry but also ensured a cohesive and disciplined approach within this esteemed medieval military order.

The Crusades: The Knights Templar in Action

The Knights Templar played a crucial role in the Crusades, defending Christian holy sites and serving as an elite fighting force.

Their Role and Influence in the Crusades

In the Crusades, The Knights Templar played a pivotal role, demonstrating their martial prowess and invincible spirit on numerous occasions. Deployed strategically, they protected the flanks, vanguard, and rear of Crusader armies during battles.

Their presence instilled confidence and provided crucial support to Christian forces. Moreover, the Templars proved their mettle as shrewd military strategists by initiating successful surprise attacks against enemy strongholds in the Holy Land.

With their unmatched determination and unwavering loyalty to defend Christian holy sites and pilgrims, the Knights Templar exerted immense influence throughout this turbulent period in history.

Criticism, Trials, and Abolition of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar faced severe criticism, underwent trials, and eventually met their demise due to accusations of heresy and corruption.

Accusations of Heresy and Blasphemy

The Knights Templar faced severe accusations of heresy and blasphemy during their trials and subsequent abolition. These allegations stemmed from claims that the Templars engaged in forbidden practices, such as idol worship and denial of the sacraments.

They were also accused of indulging in acts like sodomy, which further added to the charges against them. However, it is important to note that these claims were largely unsubstantiated, with no concrete evidence ever produced.

Despite this lack of proof, the accusations played a significant role in tarnishing the reputation of the Knights Templar and ultimately led to their downfall.

The Fall and Dismantling of the Order

The fall and dismantling of the Knights Templar came as a result of their enemies’ accusations, leading to their eventual suppression. In 1307, King Philip IV of France initiated an attack on the Order, alleging heresy, corruption, and forbidden practices.

The Templars were arrested and subjected to intense interrogations and torture. Under pressure from the French king, Pope Clement V disbanded the Order in 1312. This event marked the end of an era for this powerful medieval military order that had once protected Christian holy sites and played a significant role in the Crusades.

The persecution led to the loss of their wealth and properties while giving rise to enduring myths about their secret knowledge and influence. Despite their downfall, the Templars’ legacy continues to captivate historians, researchers, and enthusiasts alike.

Roman Catholic Church’s Position on the Knights Templar

The Roman Catholic Church, under the leadership of Pope Clement V, disbanded and suppressed the Knights Templar in 1312 following accusations of heresy and corruption.

The Council of Vienne

In 1311, the Council of Vienne was held to discuss the fate of the Knights Templar. This gathering of church leaders and officials was convened by Pope Clement V, who wanted to address the growing concerns surrounding the Order.

However, despite extensive discussions and debates, no definitive conclusion was reached regarding their guilt or innocence. The council ended without making a final decision on whether to suppress or absolve the Knights Templar.

This lack of resolution left room for further action from secular authorities like King Philip IV of France, who would later play a significant role in bringing about their downfall.

The Chinon Parchment and Absolution

In 2001, an important historical document known as the Chinon Parchment was discovered, shedding new light on the history of the Knights Templar. This parchment revealed that in 1308, Pope Clement V granted absolution to the leaders of the Templar Order.

This revelation provided insight into the Roman Catholic Church’s position on the knights and their involvement in alleged heretical practices. The absolution mentioned in the document was a significant event, representing formal forgiveness and clearing of any wrongdoing by the Church.

The significance of this absolution is still debated among historians today, but it offers valuable information about the events surrounding King Philip IV’s actions against the Templars and sheds light on how they were perceived by both secular powers and religious authorities at that time.

The Knights Templar in Popular Culture and Conspiracy Theories

The Knights Templar have become a subject of fascination in popular culture, making appearances in countless books, documentaries, and films. Their intriguing history and mysterious reputation have given rise to numerous conspiracy theories that continue to captivate audiences.

One popular theory revolves around the Templars’ alleged connection to secret knowledge and practices, fueling speculations about their involvement with the Holy Grail or other mystical artifacts.

Another theory suggests that the Templars survived their suppression and went underground, evolving into clandestine organizations such as the Freemasons.

These theories add an element of mystery and excitement to the already compelling story of the Knights Templar, ensuring their enduring appeal in popular culture.

The Teutonic Order: Comparison and Contrast with the Knights Templar

The Teutonic Order and the Knights Templar, both prominent military orders in the Middle Ages, shared similarities in mission and organization, but also had distinct differences in their geographic operation, their focus, and eventual dissolution.

Aspects

Knights Templar

Teutonic Order

Foundation

Founded in 1129, earlier than the Teutonic Order.

Founded in 1190, a few years after the establishment of the Knights Templar.

Operation Area

Primarily defended Christian holy sites and pilgrims in the Middle East.

Primarily operated in the Baltic region.

Headquarters

Established headquarters in Jerusalem and Acre.

Maintained their headquarters in Prussia.

Focus

Known for their financial dealings and banking services.

Primarily focused on military operations.

Accusations and Dissolution

Accused of corruption, heresy, and forbidden practices.
Baphomet: Was the Diabolical Demon Really Worshipped by Knights Templars?

The legend of Baphomet, the diabolical demon associated with the Knights Templar, has fueled much speculation and controversy over the years. However, historical evidence suggests that these allegations were baseless and stemmed from the persecution faced by the Templars.

The term “Baphomet” was mentioned during the trials of the Templars as a symbol or idol supposedly worshipped by them. But it is believed to have been a fabrication used by their accusers to discredit and condemn them.

In reality, there is no concrete proof that Baphomet held any significance within the Order of the Templars. It is widely thought that this alleged association with a demonic entity was conjured up by King Philip IV of France and other powerful figures who sought to destroy or control the wealth amassed by this influential medieval military order.

Despite these unfounded accusations, Baphomet continues to be linked with mysticism and conspiracy theories surrounding both ancient secret societies and modern occult practices.

The Legacy of the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar left a lasting legacy on modern banking and military tactics, as well as their significant role in the preservation of Christian holy places.

Influence on Modern Banking and Military Tactics

The influence of the Knights Templar on modern banking and military tactics cannot be underestimated. As proficient bankers, they pioneered many financial practices that are still in use today.

Offering interest-gaining loans and acting as intermediaries for money transfers, the Templars were at the forefront of early banking activities. They also invested their wealth wisely, acquiring revenue-producing properties such as farms and vineyards.

In terms of military tactics, the Templars were renowned for their strategic prowess and small-force deployment. Their ability to protect flanks, vanguards, and rears during the Crusades showcased their tactical skills.

Their Role in the Preservation of Christian Holy Places

The Knights Templar played a vital role in the preservation of Christian holy places during the medieval era. With their military prowess and dedication, they defended these sacred sites against threats from different factions in the Holy Land.

The Templars acquired lands, castles, and forts along pilgrim routes to safeguard the Christian East. They also rebuilt destroyed or constructed new castles as strongholds for protection.

Through their efforts, they successfully contributed to maintaining the sanctity of these important religious locations throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Knights Templar was a formidable Catholic medieval military order that emerged in the 12th century to protect Christian holy sites and pilgrims in the Middle East.

Through their martial prowess and monastic lifestyle, they gained significant influence and amassed wealth through banking activities. Despite their noble intentions, accusations of heresy and corruption ultimately led to their downfall.

However, their legacy lives on through modern banking practices and their impact on preserving Christian holy places during the Crusades.

Becoming a Shriner is a unique and gratifying experience that holds opportunities to build meaningful relationships and serve others.

In order to dive into this fascinating brotherhood, one must first become familiar with the prerequisites and the fundamentality of the journey that lies ahead.

As we embark on this enlightening journey together, it’s essential to be aware of the steps and the rewarding personal growth that awaits.

By understanding the significance of the process, we enhance our internal strength and develop a bond with fellow Shriners, ultimately forming an unbreakable support system.

Understanding Shriners and Freemasonry

Shriners and Freemasonry are interconnected, as both organizations share a commitment to unity and promoting the welfare of their members. While they have distinct goals and activities, understanding their relationship is crucial for anyone considering joining these brotherhoods.

We believe in the importance of the Masonic principles that guide both Shriners and Freemasons. These principles create a strong foundation for personal development, camaraderie, and community service. As a Mason, one can appreciate the rich history and traditions that have shaped these organizations over time.

It is important to note that all Shriners are Freemasons, but not every Freemason chooses to become a Shriner. To become a Shriner, one must first achieve the rank of Master Mason within Freemasonry. This involves completing the Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason degrees, which form the basis of Masonic teachings.

The Shrine is an organization grown out of Freemasonry with a focus on charitable work and fostering a spirit of fun and fellowship among its members.

Shriners are known for their distinctive red fezzes, whimsical parades, and most notably, their support for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Although united under the same principles, Shriners enjoy additional benefits and opportunities not available to regular Freemasons.

So, both Shriners and Freemasonry uphold the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. Understanding their relationship and shared values, one can better appreciate the unique opportunities provided by each organization and make an informed decision about pursuing membership.

Shriners International: History and Mission

Shriners International is a fraternity with a rich history of brotherhood and compassion, spanning across North America, Europe, and even Morocco. As a global community, we strive to uphold our Masonic values, focus on philanthropy and foster lifelong relationships among our members.

Founded in the late 19th century, our organization began as a social club for Freemasons, but we quickly evolved into more than just a fraternity. Our history demonstrates our dedication to fun, fellowship, and service.

One of the key aspects of Shriners International is our philanthropic work, an integral part of our mission. We are proud to support various projects and causes that impact the lives of people in need. Our philosophy aligns with the Masonic values that serve as a foundation for everything we do: integrity, loyalty, and compassion.

Within our global community, our members actively participate in various local, national, and international philanthropic endeavors. From organizing events to volunteering their time and resources, we are dedicated to giving back and fostering positive change across the world.

Becoming a Shriner

In order to become a Shriner, one must first be a Master Mason in good standing with a Masonic Lodge that is recognized by or in amity with the Conference of Grand Masters of North America.

Becoming a Shriner is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond ordinary friendships, as you become part of a network of hundreds of thousands of men of integrity from around the world who are committed to your success and well-being.

Once you have achieved the status of a Master Mason, you can then express your interest in joining the Shriners to members of the organization or your Masonic Lodge.

This means that in order to become a Shriner, you will need to have a solid foundation of understanding, practice, and proficiency in the first three degrees of Freemasonry.

After expressing your interest, you will be required to submit a petition for membership. This petition will be reviewed by the respective Temple, and you may be invited to participate in activities organized by the Shriners to learn more about the organization and its charitable efforts.

Throughout this process, you will have the chance to connect with fellow Shriners and learn about their experiences within the organization. By doing so, you will deepen your understanding of the value and importance of the work that Shriners do in support of their community and the Shriners Children’s Hospitals.

As you continue on your journey to becoming a Shriner, it is crucial to maintain a strong commitment to the values of the organization and the tenets of Freemasonry. By doing so, you will contribute to the positive impact that Shriners have on the lives of children and families in need.

The Petition Process

As in many organizations, the petition process is a critical step in becoming a Shriner. As mentioned, it is essential that candidates hold the title of Master Mason in Freemasonry. Once this prerequisite is met, you can move forward with the petition process.

To begin, you will need to ask a current Shriner to support and sponsor your application. This individual will not only vouch for your character but also provide valuable insight and guidance throughout the process.

If you don’t know any Shriners personally, you can utilize online resources such as the virtual mentor program to connect with someone who can assist you in completing the petition.

After you have secured a sponsor, the next step is to complete the ePetition. This document will require some basic information about yourself as well as your Masonic background. Visit the Shriner website, click ‘JOIN’, and follow the instructions to fill out the ePetition.

Once your petition has been submitted, it will undergo a review process. During this time, the organization will evaluate your credentials and recommendation from your sponsor. They may also reach out to your Masonic Lodge for additional verification.

While waiting for a response to your petition, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the values, traditions, and philanthropic efforts of the Shriners. This knowledge will not only demonstrate your genuine interest in joining the organization but also help you integrate more seamlessly once accepted.

Upon approval of your petition, you will be invited to join your local temple and participate in initiation ceremonies. These events will provide you with a deeper understanding of the Shriner organization and introduce you to your fellow members.

Masonic Principles

We take pride in upholding the core Masonic principles which include brotherly love, relief, and truth. These guiding principles serve as the foundation of our fraternity; they shape our character and inspire our actions.

Brotherly love is at the heart of our fraternity. We strive to foster a spirit of understanding, compassion, and support among our members. We actively work together to create a strong sense of camaraderie, and we believe in maintaining a genuine connection with one another, transcending beyond ordinary friendships.

Relief is another important aspect of our Masonic beliefs. We advocate for helping others in times of need, especially those less fortunate than us. This commitment to philanthropy drives our passion for service, leading to impactful actions that benefit the wider community.

Truth is an essential value that binds us together as Masons. We aim to live our lives with integrity, always acting in an honest and forthright manner. This dedication to truth reinforces our shared trust and forms the basis of our long-lasting relationships within the fraternity.

Our connection to Freemasonry underlines the fact that all Shriners are Masons, having attained the status of a Master Mason before joining our ranks. This shared experience unites us in our ongoing pursuit of personal growth and deeper understanding.

In essence, as Shriners, we uphold the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth while fostering an environment of integrity, character, and compassion.

Through these guiding values, we continue to grow and strengthen our bonds, working towards a brighter future for both our fraternity and the communities we serve.

Shriners and Family

Shriners place great emphasis on the importance of family. Our organization recognizes that family is a top priority for our members, and we strive to create an environment that fosters strong bonds between not only our members but also their spouses, children, and grandchildren.

We truly believe that becoming a Shriner goes beyond establishing ordinary friendships. Instead, it entails building lifelong relationships that extend into every aspect of our lives.

When you join the Shriners, you become part of a supportive and compassionate network of community members who share a common goal of making a positive impact on the lives of those around us.

Many events and activities at local Shrine chapters cater to the whole family, ensuring that spouses, children, and even grandchildren can participate and join in the fun.

We are proud to offer family-oriented experiences, allowing us to grow closer not only as members but as families and members of the wider community.

In our organization, the bonds between husbands, wives, and their siblings are just as significant as the friendships we make among our fellow Shriners.

We encourage everyone to get involved and bring their loved ones along for the journey, as it is through these connections that we can truly maximize the impact of our efforts and continue to build upon the positive legacy of Shriners International.

Local Chapters and Clubs

Joining a local chapter of the Shriners is an excellent way for new members to get involved and connect with others who share their interests.

Local chapters, also known as Shrine Clubs, are where Shriners gather to socialize, participate in events, and plan philanthropic activities.

Each local chapter offers members various options to explore their hobbies and build relationships with their fellow Shriners.

Our Shrine Clubs often organize events like dinners, outings, and fundraisers, which provide great opportunities for camaraderie and personal growth.

In addition to Shrine Clubs, many local chapters have units dedicated to specific interests or hobbies.

Examples of these units can range from marching bands and clown troops to classic car clubs and motorcycle groups.

These units allow members with shared passions to work together in supporting the Shriners’ overall mission while forming close friendships and lifelong bonds.

Being a part of a local chapter not only helps us grow as individuals but also strengthens our organization as a whole. Active participation in clubs and units allows us to better support our philanthropic goals, particularly the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Furthermore, it encourages a sense of unity and fellowship among members, enabling us to truly live out our motto, “Having Fun, Helping Kids.”

Ready to take the first step in joining a local chapter? You can find a chapter near you through the Shriners International website. Get started on your journey towards becoming an active member of a community dedicated to fraternity, fun, and philanthropy.

Women in the Shriners Community

In this section, we will explore the valuable contributions of women in the Shriners community and their involvement in various organizations, focusing primarily on the Daughters of the Nile, Shrine Guilds of America, and Order of the Eastern Star. Through their active participation and dedication to the community, women have significantly enriched the fraternity and played a vital role in its functions.

Role of Women in Shriners

Women, being related to Shriners by birth, marriage, or adoption, are eligible to join certain female organizations within the Shriners community.

These organizations provide them with the opportunity to engage in social and philanthropic activities, build relationships, and support the causes dear to the Shriners fraternity while fostering the same camaraderie and purpose.

The main female organizations include the Daughters of the Nile, Ladies’ Oriental Shrine of North America (LOSNA), and Shrine Guilds of America.

This organization also supports the mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children and contributes to the welfare of children through various philanthropic initiatives.

Order of the Eastern Star

The Order of the Eastern Star (OES) is an international, Masonic-related organization open to both men and women with a focus on family involvement.

Women who are eligible to join OES include wives, daughters, and sisters of Master Masons, as well as members of other organizations affiliated with Freemasonry.

The OES emphasizes the values of charity, goodwill, and fraternal bonds as they strive to better their communities and the lives of their members.

Through these organizations, the women in the Shriners community play a significant role in enriching the fraternity and contributing to its philanthropic efforts.

Their involvement strengthens the bonds between Shriners and their families, supporting the overall mission of the Shriners to help those in need.

Shriners Hospitals for Children

These events also serve to raise awareness and strengthen our connections within the communities we serve.

Becoming a Leader in the Shriner Community

As we strive to become leaders in the Shriner community, it’s important to understand the journey and the responsibilities that come with it. Becoming a Shriner involves following the laws of fraternity, which emphasize brotherly love, relief, truth, fun, and fellowship. As Shriners, we continue to uphold Masonic principles but also enjoy additional benefits unique to our organization.

To begin our path as leaders, we must first become Freemasons. The Shrine operates in parallel with Freemasonry, closely aligning with its core tenets, and requiring a Masonic Lodge membership for proper functionality. Once we have achieved the Master Mason degree in Freemasonry, we qualify for and are invited to join the Shrine.

When aiming to become a leader in the Shriner community, we should strive to be exceptional friends, fathers, mentors, and Nobles of the Shrine. As friends and Nobles, we must provide support and encouragement to our fellow members, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. As fathers, our role extends to guiding and caring for our families, exhibiting the values and teachings of the Shriner community.

Taking the initiative to mentor new members and sharing our experiences and knowledge is a crucial aspect of leadership. Through mentorship, we can help shape the future of the Shriner community and contribute to its growth and success.

Moreover, staying active in our local Shrine, participating in meetings and events, and taking on responsibilities within the organization will not only enhance our leadership skills but also strengthen the bond within the community.

Social and Fundraising Events

Our organization is known for its diverse social activities that provide opportunities for members to bond and create lasting friendships. Among these activities are parades, golf tournaments, and trap shooting events.

Parades have always been a classic way for Shriners to showcase their commitment to fun and fellowship. We proudly participate in various parades throughout the year, often in our iconic small cars and distinctive attire. These events not only entertain the community but also help us to share our message of brotherhood and camaraderie.

Golf outings are another enjoyable activity that many of our members look forward to. We host and participate in numerous golf tournaments, giving Shriners a chance to unwind on the green while fostering camaraderie and friendly competition. These events often serve as fundraisers for our philanthropic endeavors, allowing us to support our charitable causes while having a good time.

Trap shooting is yet another popular pastime among Shriners. We organize regular trap shooting events where members can test their skills and engage in friendly competition. Like our other social activities, these events are an excellent opportunity for us to bond and support one another in a fun and relaxed setting.

In addition to these leisure activities, we also dedicate our efforts towards fundraising for our organization and the causes we support. Our fundraising events range from large galas and auctions to smaller, local initiatives. These events give us the opportunity to not only raise funds for our various philanthropic projects but also share our mission and values with the wider community.

Overall, our social and fundraising events offer Shriners an enjoyable way to make a difference while forming strong connections within our brotherhood. Through fun and fellowship, we continue to support our communities and make a meaningful impact.

Additional Information

Shriners continue to uphold their dedication to Masonic principles while enjoying some unique benefits exclusive to their membership.

Before joining the Shriners, it’s essential to first become a Master Mason in good standing within your Masonic lodge. This status, achieved by completing the Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason degrees, allows you to apply for membership as a Shriner.

Shriners International is an appendant body organization, which means it operates alongside the general Masonic fraternity but serves a more particular focus – in this case, supporting Shriners Children’s Hospitals. As a Shriner, you will have the exclusive opportunity to serve in various roles that aid in the support and growth of this vital philanthropic endeavor.

To stay informed about Shriner-related news and events, it’s always a good idea to join the organization’s mailing list. This will connect you with valuable resources and help to maintain your relationship with fellow Shriners.

While many believe that Shriners have a connection to Islam due to the symbolism found on the fez (the organization’s iconic headgear), it’s important to understand that there is no actual religious affiliation between the two. The Shriners organization has always been an inclusive group, welcoming members of various faiths and belief systems.

The topic of whether the Scottish Rite and Shriners are the same often arises among those interested in Freemasonry. Though they share similarities and connections, these two entities are distinct groups with their own characteristics, goals, and ways of operation.

This article aims to clarify the differences and similarities between the Scottish Rite and Shriners, shedding light on their unique aspects in the world of Freemasonry.

Are Scottish Rite And Shriners The Same?

The Scottish Rite and Shriners are not the same. Although both organizations share a connection to Freemasonry, they have different purposes and structures. The Scottish Rite delves deeper into Masonic philosophy and teachings, and the Shriners promote fun, fellowship, and charitable activities.

Difference Between Scottish Rite and Shriners

The Scottish Rite and Shriners are both organizations within the larger community of Freemasonry, but they have notable differences. The Scottish Rite is one of the largest and most widely practiced Masonic Rites, while Shriners International is a fraternity primarily focused on fun and fellowship. Both organizations promote the Masonic principles of brotherly love, truth, and relief but have specific purposes, rituals, and structures that set them apart.

The Scottish Rite is a concordant body of Freemasonry, which means it is not part of the Craft Lodge but closely associated with it. Members of the Scottish Rite must first be a Master Mason in a Craft Lodge. The Scottish Rite offers additional degrees beyond the first three of Freemasonry, providing its members with further understanding and knowledge about their Masonic journey. The teachings and ceremonies of the Scottish Rite are designed to elaborate on moral, philosophical, and ethical concepts.

Shriners International, on the other hand, is a fraternity within the broader Masonic family that requires its members to be a Master Mason. However, the Shriners have a unique purpose – promoting fun, fellowship, and philanthropy. Shriners are known for their distinctive red fezzes and their support of various charitable activities, most notably, their network of Shriners Hospitals for Children, which provide medical care to children in need. Unlike the Scottish Rite, the rituals and ceremonies of the Shriners do not focus on furthering Masonic teachings but on camaraderie and service to others.

In summary, the Scottish Rite and Shriners are different organizations within Freemasonry, each serving distinct purposes, with the Scottish Rite delving deeper into Masonic philosophy and teachings, and the Shriners promoting fun, fellowship, and charitable activities. Both organizations contribute to the rich tapestry of Freemasonry and provide opportunities for growth and fellowship for their members.

Are Scottish Rite and Shriners Both Part of Freemasonry?

The Scottish Rite and Shriners are closely connected to Freemasonry but serve different purposes within the organization.

The Scottish Rite is an appendant body of Freemasonry, which a Master Mason may join for further exposure to the principles of Freemasonry. It is also concordant, as some of its degrees relate to the degrees of Symbolic (Craft) Freemasonry. The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite is an optional part of Freemasonry and serves as a continuation of the story of the building of Solomon’s Temple that is started in the first three lodge degrees.

On the other hand, the Shriners are not a Masonic organization but require Masonic lodge membership as a prerequisite for joining. All Shriners are Freemasons, but not all Freemasons become Shriners. The Shrine does not confer any degree that continues or enlarges the Masonic degrees; however, it is an affiliated organization that serves to strengthen and uphold the principles of Freemasonry.

To become a Shriner, one must first become a Master Mason, thus establishing the connection between Freemasonry and Shriners International. The fact that all Shriners are Masons reinforces the bond between the two organizations, although they are not the same and serve different functions.

In summary, both the Scottish Rite and Shriners have connections to Freemasonry, yet they are distinct in their purposes and affiliations. Scottish Rite is an appendant body that continues the Masonic teachings, whereas Shriners International is a separate organization requiring Masonic membership but does not confer any additional Masonic degrees.

Significance in Modern Freemasonry

Although their focuses differ, both Scottish Rite and Shriners play important roles in the overarching structure of Freemasonry:

Education: The Scottish Rite provides members with the opportunity to delve deeper into the Masonic principles, enhancing their understanding and personal growth.

Philanthropy: The Shriners are known for their charitable work, specifically their focus on children’s healthcare and research in the field of medicine.

Comradery: Both organizations offer fellowship and opportunities for Freemasons to form bonds with their brethren, sharing a common goal in upholding the values and principles of the craft.

Membership Requirements and Qualifications

Different Requirements to Join the Scottish Rite versus the Shriners

The Scottish Rite is the largest and most widely practiced Masonic Rite, employing a lodge system. To become a member of the Scottish Rite, a person must first be a Master Mason. This means that the candidate should have achieved the highest degree in the Masonic Blue Lodge, which is the third degree or the Master Mason degree.

The Shriners, on the other hand, is a separate fraternity known for its philanthropic activities and for providing support to children’s hospitals. In the past, to become a Shriner, a person had to be either a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason or a Knight Templar in the York Rite. However, within the last 20 years, these requirements have changed, and now all Master Masons are eligible to join the Shriners.

There are some key differences between the Scottish Rite and the Shriners in terms of their membership requirements and qualifications:

Scottish Rite

Shriners

Must be a Master Mason

Must be a Master Mason

No additional degrees required

Previously required additional degrees

Both the Scottish Rite and the Shriners require a candidate to be a Master Mason, but the additional requirements to join the Shriners have changed in recent years to make it more accessible for all Master Masons. This illustrates a key difference in the requirements and qualifications for membership between these two organizations.

Can Someone Be a Member of Both the Scottish Rite and the Shriners?

As both the Scottish Rite and the Shriners require their members to be Master Masons first, it is quite common for individuals to be members of both organizations. Being dually affiliated allows members to expand their Masonic experiences and connections, as well as contribute to the distinct missions of each organization.

It is important to note that while both Scottish Rite and Shriners have connections to Freemasonry, they cater to different interests and commitments within the Masonic community. Scottish Rite membership may appeal to those seeking a deeper understanding of Masonic teachings, while Shriners membership often attracts those looking to engage in charitable projects and social events.

Philanthropic and Community Service Activities

Both the Scottish Rite and the Shriners contribute to society through diverse philanthropic and community service activities.

Scottish Rite

The Scottish Rite, particularly the Scottish Rite Foundation, supports a range of philanthropic endeavors, including:

RiteCare Scottish Rite Childhood Language Program (SRCLP): This initiative aims to help children with speech and language disorders improve their communication skills.

Scholarships: The Scottish Rite Foundation offers scholarships for students pursuing higher education, primarily in the fields of education and medicine.

National Disaster Relief: The organization plays a role in assisting those affected by natural disasters in the United States and around the world.

Shriners

Shriners International takes a different approach to philanthropy by focusing on a specific cause, which is children’s healthcare. The Shriners Hospitals for Children were established in 1922 and are still supported by the fraternity today. They specialize in various pediatric treatments, including orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate surgeries.

Although the Scottish Rite and Shriners have different philanthropic and community service activities, they share a common goal of improving the lives of those in need. Both organizations are committed to making a difference in their communities and ultimately, the world.

Notable Members Throughout History

The Scottish Rite and Shriners organizations have had various distinguished members over the years, playing essential roles in the fraternity and philanthropy.

In the Scottish Rite, one of the prominent members includes Isaac Da Costa, Sr., who became a Deputy Inspector General for South Carolina. He, along with Abraham Forst, Joseph M. Myers, and Barend M. Spitzer, was instrumental in establishing Scottish Rite Freemasonry in South Carolina.

On the Shriners side, the fraternity has seen membership from notable figures like President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was a dedicated Shriner. President Truman and President Ford were also members of the Shriners during their lives, contributing to numerous charitable initiatives led by the organization.

As both organizations comprise Master Masons, some notable members have been part of both the Scottish Rite and Shriners. For example, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, was a Scottish Rite Mason and an active Shriner. Aldrin’s accomplishments and still-growing legacy in scientific discovery and exploration have served as an inspiration for both organizations.

Numerous actors, musicians, and athletes have also been proud members of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. These have included John Wayne, Roy Rogers, and Red Skelton, contributing positively to the public image of Freemasonry and promoting their philanthropic causes.

Although the Scottish Rite and Shriners are separate entities within the Masonic fraternity, a shared roster of dedicated, accomplished members from various walks of life showcases their impact on society, philanthropy, and the broader Masonic community.

The intriguing world of fraternal organizations has long been a subject of fascination and curiosity for many. One such organization that has captured the attention of scholars, historians, and the general public alike is Freemasonry. Known for its rich history, symbolism, and philanthropic activities, Freemasonry has established itself as a prominent and influential society across the globe.

Within this vast organization, various branches and degrees exist, leading to some confusion and prompting questions about their distinctions and similarities. One of the most frequently asked questions is whether the Scottish Rite is the same as the Masons.

In this article, we will delve into the origins, structure, and characteristics of these two entities to provide a comprehensive understanding of their relationship and differences.

Is Scottish Rite the Same as Masons?

The Scottish Rite is a part of Freemasonry, specifically one of the appendant bodies that a Master Mason may join for further exposure to the principles of Freemasonry. Although it belongs to the larger world of Freemasonry, the Scottish Rite is not synonymous with it. Freemasonry is a broader term that encompasses various organizations, degrees, and rituals, while the Scottish Rite is a specific branch that deals with additional degrees.

The Scottish Rite, also known as the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, is an optional pathway for Masons who want to expand their knowledge and understanding of the craft. It presents degrees from 4° to 32°, which present further teachings related to morality, ethics, and philosophy. These degrees are aimed at offering personal development and a deeper understanding of one’s self and the world.

Membership in the Scottish Rite is limited to Master Masons who have completed their 3rd Degree. Often referred to as the “University of Freemasonry”, it provides additional education and opportunities for growth within the Masonic framework. The Scottish Rite degrees, while building upon the foundational lessons of the lower degrees, are not mandatory for all Freemasons. Therefore, it is essential to differentiate the Scottish Rite from Freemasonry as a whole.

Understanding Scottish Rite and Freemasonry

History and Origins

The Scottish Rite is a concordant body of Freemasonry with its own distinctive structure and rituals. It originated in France in the 18th century, and its roots can be traced back to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. The Rite was introduced to the United States in the early 19th century, where it quickly gained popularity amongst Freemasons. Today, the Scottish Rite is practiced in many countries around the world, including the United Kingdom and Australia, where it is known as the Rose Croix.

Structure and Organization

The Scottish Rite is comprised of numerous degrees, extending from the 4th to the 33rd. It operates under a separate lodge system from the main body of Freemasonry, with different rituals and structures for each degree. Candidates for the Scottish Rite usually must be Master Masons and their progression through the degrees is meant to provide further insight and understanding of the Masonic teachings.

The organization of the Scottish Rite is hierarchical, with the various degrees grouped into four distinct bodies:

Lodge of Perfection (4th-14th degree)

Chapter of Rose Croix (15th-18th degree)

Council of Kadosh (19th-30th degree)

Consistory (31st-32nd degree)

The 33rd degree, known as the Sovereign Grand Inspector General, is an honorary degree, awarded to a select few for their dedication and service to the fraternity.

The Relationship Between Scottish Rite and Freemasonry

While the Scottish Rite is deeply intertwined with Freemasonry, it is important to recognize that they are separate entities. The Scottish Rite is an appendant body that builds upon the teachings and moral lessons of the first three degrees of Freemasonry, making it an optional path for Master Masons to explore. However, it is not a requirement for Freemasons to join the Scottish Rite, as membership in a symbolic lodge is sufficient to be considered a full-fledged Freemason.

In addition to its distinct rituals and organizational structure, the Scottish Rite also offers opportunities for further study and reflection on the philosophical aspects of Freemasonry. For many Masons, pursuing the Scottish Rite degrees provides a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the craft. However, it should always be remembered that the basic tenets of Freemasonry, such as brotherly love, relief, and truth, remain constant regardless of participation in the Scottish Rite.

The Differences Between Scottish Rite and Freemasonry

Degree Systems and Ceremonies

The Scottish Rite and Freemasonry both belong to the larger world of Masonic organizations, but they differ in their degree systems and ceremonies. Freemasonry generally comprises the first three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. In contrast, the Scottish Rite regularly confers degrees 4 through 32, with an honorary 33rd degree for special service. These higher degree numbers do not signify higher ranks but rather offer further exposure to Masonic principles and teachings.

The ceremonies conducted within each organization also differ. While the three degrees in Freemasonry share common rituals and experiences, Scottish Rite ceremonies can vary significantly depending on the jurisdiction.

Philosophical Beliefs and Practices

Both Scottish Rite and Freemasonry share the foundation of Freemasonry’s principles, but the Scottish Rite offers additional perspectives on these teachings. The Scottish Rite is considered an appendant body of Freemasonry, elaborating on the lessons and teachings of the first three degrees. This can lead to a broader exploration of philosophical beliefs and practices within the Scottish Rite compared to symbolic (craft) Freemasonry.

The Scottish Rite degrees may also emphasize different aspects of Masonic principles and teachings, leading some members to perceive themselves as “esoteric Masons” due to their focus on the more symbolic and metaphysical aspects of the craft.

Membership Requirements

Both Scottish Rite and Freemasonry organizations require their members to be Master Masons who have completed the third degree of Freemasonry. However, since the Scottish Rite is an appendant body and offers additional degrees beyond that of Master Mason, potential members may need to join a specific Scottish Rite Lodge or obtain a recommendation from a current Scottish Rite member to gain access to further teachings and ceremonies.

Although the two organizations share common roots in Freemasonry, their degree systems, ceremonies, philosophical beliefs, and membership requirements set them apart, offering distinct experiences for their members.

Debunking Myths and Misconceptions about Scottish Rite and Masons

Addressing Conspiracy Theories and False Portrayals in Media

Many conspiracy theories and false portrayals in media have surrounded the Scottish Rite and Masons, creating myths and misconceptions about these organizations. One common belief is that they form a secret society with a hidden agenda for world domination. However, this is far from the truth. The Scottish Rite and Masons are fraternal organizations, both focused on promoting personal growth, charity, and fellowship among their members.

Moreover, both organizations operate with a high degree of transparency, detailing their purposes and values on their respective websites and in various published materials. Still, public skepticism tends to arise due to the historical association of members with influential positions in society. However, it is essential to understand that membership in the Scottish Rite or Masons does not grant any individual power over others or influence global events.

Clarifying the Purpose and Values of These Organizations

The Scottish Rite is an appendant body of Freemasonry, a system of degrees that expand and elaborate the philosophies introduced in the first three degrees of Craft Masonry. The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite is completely optional for Masons and is not a separate organization. Its purpose is to provide further moral instruction and encourage personal development among its members.

Freemasonry, on the other hand, is a broader organization that unites men of diverse backgrounds in a common pursuit of personal betterment. The values of Freemasonry include equality, freedom, self-improvement, and brotherly love. Members practice these values in their daily lives and contribute to various charitable causes.

It is important to dispel the myths and misconceptions associated with Scottish Rite and Masons. Although both organizations may share similar themes, they operate with distinct structures and purposes. The Scottish Rite provides advanced moral teachings to complement what Masons learn, while Freemasonry as a whole focuses on fostering personal growth and unity among a diverse membership. By understanding the true nature of these organizations, one can recognize their role in promoting individual self-improvement and collective goodwill.

How to Become a Scottish Rite Mason

Requirements and Expectations

To become a Scottish Rite Mason, one must first be a Master Mason in good standing in a recognized lodge. This ensures that the individual has already proven their commitment to the values and teachings of Freemasonry. Once a Master Mason, the candidate must complete a petition and include the appropriate fee. After submitting the petition, the candidate is expected to attend a “Reunion” where the Scottish Rite Degrees are conferred upon them.

As a Scottish Rite Mason, there are several expectations that members should strive to meet. These include:

Upholding the values and principles of Freemasonry

Continuously seeking personal growth and development

Participating in the lodge activities and contributing to the community

Mentoring and supporting fellow members

Opportunities for Growth and Development

The Scottish Rite is often referred to as the “Graduate School of Masonry” due to the numerous opportunities it offers for growth and development. These include advanced degrees and titles, educational programs, and leadership roles within the organization. By pursuing these opportunities, Scottish Rite Masons can further expand their knowledge of Freemasonry principles and enhance their personal growth.

Some opportunities for growth and development within the Scottish Rite include:

Access to higher degrees: The Scottish Rite offers degrees from the 4th to the 33rd, providing members with a deeper understanding of the teachings and lessons of Freemasonry.

Educational programs: Scottish Rite members can participate in various educational programs, workshops, and discussion groups to further their knowledge and personal growth.

Leadership roles: Active participation in the Scottish Rite allows members to take on leadership positions within their local Valley, which can range from officers to committee members.

By meeting the requirements and expectations of the Scottish Rite and engaging in opportunities for growth and development, one can experience the distinct benefits of this esteemed Masonic appendant body.

Conclusion

The Scottish Rite is a unique and essential part of the broader Freemasonry system, offering its members an opportunity to delve deeper into Masonic tradition, values, and storytelling.

While it shares the fundamentals of Freemasonry, the Scottish Rite introduces elements of knighthood and a distinct hierarchy, setting it apart from other appendant bodies within the Masonic fraternity.

Founded in 1873, the Order of the Amaranth is a Masonic order that was established for Master Masons and their related women. It is often confused with the Order of the Eastern Star, but is not the same entity.

Image

The idea for the order was taken from the Order of Amarante, a group created by Queen Christina of Sweden in 1653 for knights and their ladies. Let’s take a look at how the order developed over time to become a notable appendant body of Freemasonry.

The establishment of the Order of the Amaranth is credited to James B. Taylor in 1860, who created a fraternal society that mirrored some of the structure and teachings of Freemasonry. By 1873, Robert Macoy added structure to Taylor’s order and it became known as the Order of Amaranth, which was an essential component of the new Adoptive Rite of Masonry proposed at the time.

Teachings within the Order are based upon Christianity, and members are constantly reminded of their duty to God, their country, and their fellow beings. Central to the teachings is the ‘Golden Rule,’ and those within are encouraged to conform to the virtues of truth, faith, wisdom, and charity.

The structure of the Order of Amaranth is somewhat unique, as it is arranged into ‘Courts’ at state level. Within these Courts, women are addressed as ‘Honoured Lady’ while men are referred to as ‘Sir Knight.’ Each court has a number of officers, including:

Royal Matron, Royal Patron
Associate Matron, Associate Patron
Secretary, Treasurer
Conductress
Associate Conductress
Prelate
Historian
Marshal in the East
Marshal in the West
Musician
Standard Bearer
Trustees
Warder
Sentinel

Like all Masonic orders, the Order of Amaranth is heavily involved in charitable work. Their focal philanthropic venture is the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, which has raised over $16 million to fund research projects to work towards a cure for diabetes.

The Shriners is a Masonic society that was founded in 1870 in New York City. It was formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and bases its membership on the simple principles of fun and fellowship.

While you might have heard of the Shriners in passing, you may not know a great deal about this unique order of Freemasonry, as it is often misunderstood by brothers on the outside. Here are four things you probably didn’t know about the Shriners.

ART: KUNSTMATRIX

1. The group was founded by actor William Florence after attending a party in France.

In the late 1860s, actor William Florence was invited to a party in Marseille, France, that was hosted by an Arab diplomat. The diplomat invited members to form a secret society at the conclusion of the party, and it is thought that this inspired Florence to start the Shriners on his return to the US. The Middle Eastern theme developed in the initial temples in New York City was attributed to the fact that the host of the party in France was an Arab.

2. The Shriners have raised millions of dollars for charity.

Although priding themselves as a social society, the Shriners are well respected for their fundraising achievements. Their charitable arm, the Shriners Hospitals for Children, is a network of 22 healthcare facilities that were setup and are sponsored by the organization. These facilities seek to provide free or heavily subsidized healthcare to any child under the age of 18, regardless of their race or background.

3. They raise awareness of their work through localized parades.

Each Shriner temple is tasked with promoting a positive Shriner image to the community in which they operate. Central to this is the hosting of annual parades, where Shriners congregate and walk down local streets in their Shriner garb, while often traveling on lawn mower motor-powered cars. It can be a bizarre sight to the untrained eye, but it’s an important component of the Shriner identity.

4. The Shriners is not an Islamic organization.

It’s a common misconception amongst brothers that the Shriners is actually an Islamic organization. This is perhaps due to the fact that the temples are adorned with Middle Eastern décor, and the Shriners themselves were red fezzes that are most commonly worn in Morocco. However, the Shriners was founded in New York City and the 350,000 members come from a variety of backgrounds and practice different faiths. It’s no more an Islamic organization than the Scottish or York Rites of Freemasonry.

Closing thoughts.

The Shriners attract a lot of attention within Masonic circles because of the fact that they are totally unique, and do things in their own style. It’s actually a fascinating organization when you dig a little deeper, and their interesting rituals and social orientation makes the Shriners an excellent option if you’re looking to join a Masonic order with a twist!

Today, the Knights Templar is a fraternal order associated with Freemasonry. It is known for its Christian values and teachings, and many of the brothers that join the Knights Templar are Protestants.

The history of the Knights Templar is fascinating. We have to go back to the Christian crusades of the Middle Ages to fully appreciate the significance of the order, and to understand the Templar’s link to Freemasonry.

Let’s begin by looking at the convening of the Knights Templar and how the order was linked to the building of King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem.

The convening of the Knights Templar

Formed in 1118 by Hugues de Payns and Godefroy de St. Omer in France, the Knights Templar wasn’t originally known by its present-day name. The initial knights that joined the order referred to themselves simply as the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ.

This name was an apt description of the knight’s duties in the early days. They were tasked with protecting pilgrims who travelled to sacred Christian sites across Europe. Because pilgrimages in the Middle Ages were fraught with danger, the knights would accompany religious caravans across the continent.

The character of the founding knights

Soon after the group’s founding, there were less than ten knights. They had a reputation for being aggressive, obedient, and loyal, and would do anything within their power to protect the pilgrims they were accompanying.

Their unrelenting character came from the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience they took in the name of St. Benedict. Their sole purpose in life was to serve and protect, which made them fearless warriors in the name of Christ.

The knights’ link to King Solomon’s Temple

As the knights quickly developed a reputation for the fearless protection they offered their Christian charges, they were offered accommodation in the Palace of. King Baldwin I in Jerusalem. Baldwin’s temple stood on the site of King Solomon’s Temple, and it was from this accommodation that the knights took their name.

The evolution of the Knights Templar

As the knights’ battle experience grew, so did their influence in society. They quickly became one of the most feared and respected orders of the Crusades, and the members of the order were given special rights, including tax exemption and immunity from ex-communication from the church.

Such was the knights’ influence on medieval society, they were essentially a law unto themselves, as they believed they were only answerable to God. While some questioned their morality, few could doubt their power and influence over those in power at the time.

The Knights Templar and Freemasonry

The modern-day Knights Templar order came into being in Ireland in 1780. Due to the religious origins of the original order, the Knights Templar is open to people of a Christian faith only. While little is known about the rituals and ceremonies of the order, it’s believed that the teachings focus on telling the story of the Knights’ role in the Christian Crusades.

To this day, the Knights Templar remains an active and important fraternal order of Freemasonry, and attracts members who are interested in learning more about the role of the Christian knights of the Middle Ages.
